Leaving the mountains for the first time in three months. Getting to the airport will take longer than the flight to London, but I can work on the trains.

Out early for today’s walk before I travel to London to visit the boy. Last walk until next week: 4.7km, 319m ⬆️, 3°C 🌤️ #Morgenspaziergang #MorningWalk

I skipped my usual Alp Sura hike last Saturday and will miss it again this Saturday, so I decided to do it midweek. A bit warmer this morning: 7.1km, 486m ⬆️, 1h:59m, 5–8°C 🌤️ #Morgenspaziergang #MorningWalk

Maria’s Bird Divinations are so good that after buying a set for my (bird loving) mother, I had to buy another set for myself! A little daily poetry to start my days and something to think about.

The second #birddivination I ever made, and one of only two with extinct species. Find the full series, along with the story and process behind it, at https://t.co/jRl0EjdtF4 https://t.co/VFewZDFMer

Apple used to make stuff I wanted. Probably both Apple and I have changed. I reckon it’s better this way.

Another crisp Autumn morning. A few cows are still out grazing in the pastures above town and Lajet is starting to freeze: 5.6km, 398m ⬆️, 1°C ☀️ #Morgenspaziergang #MorningWalk

Last hike in Saas-Fee before winter sets in.

Down in the valley the larches had turned gold; up at Felskinn and Mittelallalin, the first snow had already dusted the glaciers and ridges. Two seasons in a single day, with a glacial lake as a bonus.

See you next season, mountains 🏔️

I spent quite a bit of time exploring Blue Lake in the North Cascades, looking for different ways to photograph the fall colors.

This view caught my eye because of the golden larches in the foreground, the dark evergreens, and the mountain reflected in the still water.

It was a beautiful place to spend an autumn afternoon. 🍂🏔️

I love 1990s computer science (which we are still doing in 2026) but every once in a while I think that it would have been most fun to be a computer scientist in the 1950s or 1960s. And I don’t mean because the low hanging fruit hadn’t been hoovered up.

There is a discipline to computing in resource-constrained environments that we have lost, and this discipline leads to “magic”: things that feel impossible for their time but are really done by magnificent feats of engineering and hacking.

The RAM crunch hasn’t led to the reemergence of discipline and magic, unfortunately, because (I think) resource-hungry ways of computing are entrenched and everyone knows that in a few years we will have RAM again, and computers with only 8Gb RAM are usable with today’s processors that would have been utterly unusable without double or triple the RAM several years ago. So the urgency of efficient computing is just not here.

Coldest morning yet this Autumn with an oddly uniform cloud cover obscuring all the peaks. Easy walk up to Plan dal Növ: 4.9km, 268m ⬆️, 1°C ☁️ #Morgenspaziergang #MorningWalk
