Me, in need for a new music hosting backend: "Hmm, maybe I should take a look at Mirlo? I can selfhost it. Hmm, okay, let's ignore the script installers... oh, container? Let's see, there's probably a docker-compose file somewhere here..."

Me, 2 minutes into the stack definition file: "WTF? They use MINIO???" (context: Minio died somewhere in 2025 and is outdated and insecure by now)

Me: "Mayybe I DON'T use Mirlo then?"

The workload has escaped its container and detected that it is being migrated, and it is NOT PLEASED.

So you missed me playing at this years GPN24? Or you saw me and want to repeat that? Then I have good news, because I'm gonna play this september at #mrmcd26

Wanna know what to expect? Here's the video of my performance at GPN: https://makertube.net/w/kjMQaaWVVr9oFNsPW5P8Yy

Wanna know when my slot is? Yeah, me too. I'll let you know when I know. 😅

Nur falls es keiner mitbekommt: Die KfW-Förderung für Wärmepumpen wird gerade kaputt gemacht, bevor Menschen sie noch nutzen um ihre Gasheizung zu sanieren. Also jetzt gerade! Wenn ihr Förderanträge einreichen wollt, müsst ihr das bis morgen Mittag getan haben!

I just had "the talk" with my 9yo. He came to me asking "Dad, why does AI use so much water just for generating one answer?"

So I explained to him how LLM works, how GenAI came out of that and why AI is a marketing term and absolutely wrong in that context.

Then I loaded GPT4All on my laptop and asked the thing what the result of 9+7 is. It took my poor laptop cpu 12 seconds to come up with an answer and another 12 seconds to generate the sentence with the answer. I showed him how fast kcalc (using the CPUs ALU functions) comes up with the answer for that specific question.

And then I asked a followup question, which almost take 2 minutes to compute. I showed him how the previous question and its answer became part of the prompt which made the calculation longer more complicated just to emulate a dialoge.

He noticed that my laptops CPU fan stepped up and started to roar to get rid of the core heat. Then I explained to him how AI datacenters solve all this ineffitiency by running millions of servers in parallel and how this generates so much heat that it "uses" cooling water by just boiling it until it vapourizes.

I then explained the current business model and how the companies currently burn through their cash to be the last one standing on the market when everyone else dropped out or became bankrupt. What we user pay for using this and what we actually would have to (and in the future probably will) pay for this service.

Needless to say, my kid is not a big fan now.

Also I need to point this out: This will be a random generated set. The idea is: Switch to the T-8s 303 BASS channel, push Shift-A a few times until either 8 or 16 LEDs (or 5 or 6 or 9 or whatever polymetric pattern you feel could be cool) are lit, then unmute it, listen to the ideas that come from a bunch of randomly generated notes and start punching in beat patterns into the drum computer. Tweak filter settings to unfold the melody, tweak reverb and delay to build a room and hit it hard with your beat. Until it gets boring or you feel you archieved everything. Fade out (or use the delay as buffer), make sure the 303 is on mute and hit Shift-A again as much as you like. Fade it, alter the Beat, rinse and repeat.

...and never hit Shift-A and G# at the same time with your fat fingers or the T-8 crashes because Roland didn't fix this bug (that I reported and got confirmed last year) yet... 😅

Not sure if I have posted the event link here yet, but: In about one week I'm going to play a set at the Gulaschprogrammiernacht #GPN24 in Karlsruhe. https://cfp.gulas.ch/gpn24-lounge/talk/MCXXDV/

I will be on stage next weeks saturday, 06.06. starting at 18:00 and uh, it will be the first time I officially play for 90min. I tried this a few times now and I start to feel comfortable with the idea.

This is not final yet but I plan to come up with a Roland Tr-8S, a Roland Aira Compact T-8, a Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad multieffect device and a Sim'n Tonic Nome 1 (former Midronome) midi clock. I'm also going to put in my Zoom H1n recorder so that we have something to listen to later and if I have room left on my desk, I will also set up my Novation Circuit Tracks and the Roland Aira Compact S-1 to perform a Song or two from the Monotonic album, but that's only if there's room.

The WOC stage is outside, next to the food tent, which means you don't need a ticket to see me. Just come to the ZKM. But if you want and you're lucky, there might be day passes left so that you could go watch hacker do hacky things, see a talk about hacky stuff or just enjoy a very large number of neurodivergent and friendly freaks being themselves. 🥰

Panik?

Okay, I made two recordings. The first one was crap but I let it run through anyway to have something to a/b compare to. The second one was better. Turns out I have the Master Compressor activated on the Circuit Tracks and the bassline was too loud in the mix, which triggered the compressor and lead to wobbly volume levels. It became better when I dialed back the bassline a bit, which is the second recording. I'm down for a third recording with deactivated master compression, but...

I think I hate the ending. That last note. I hate it and I need to replace it. Fuck! 😅

After a longer break I gave the song a listen with fresh ears for mixing finetuning and maybe some last minute adjustments, filter swipes, etc.

You know what? Fuck this, this shit slaps hard! I MIGHT tweak the rumble level a bit but the rest stays exactly as it is right now!

I don't get it, why do they always point out that the Artemis 2 crew is going to see "what no human eye had seen before"? All Apollo missions that went to the moon had at least their command module orbiting around the moon at least once (even Apollo 13 who did no orbital burn but directly returned to earth passed by the back side of the moon doing so). And the Apollo CM had five windows: One left and right, two at the front and one on the docking hatch. You can't tell me those guys went to the moon without firing their RCS trusters to roll their ship until the surface came into view at least once??

Also: They are currently describing terrain features which they are spotting with their eyes and manually snap pictures. NASA, you have the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter in a polar orbit for over 16 years now. It has a camera. You have high resolution pictures and laser scans of the entire surface... why do human astronauts now have to complain that they need to put their correction glasses up and down again when they look from the bright moon surface back to their tablet computer screen in the darkened cockpit? There's no science to gain for anyone. This is just scratching the presidents ego, nothing more.

I'm getting old. And I need to move this fleshsack more. I was jumping, dancing and walking for like 3h during yesterdays show and my calves are sore and hurt. Also do my knees. I had no idea I have muscles around the kneecaps but obviously I do. And they hurt. Like shit. 😭

First things first: The sore muscles need to stop hurting. Then I need to do more sports, but not too much. Which is hard because I have ADHD. When I force myself to do something, normally I overdo it. Which means more sore mucles in this case.

This week I received a few emails at work. Two of them were Copilot-generated. And I immediately recognized them as such, because the style was entirely wrong for the people who send the mails. One of the mails was refering to a meeting I had with that person. And the facts were entirely wrong. Things I said suddenly became things they said, things we agreed on changed... At this point I don't know if it was hallucinated or purposely prompted. My instinct is to pretend the mail was not generated but written. And full of lies. Because if I don't say anything, it becomes fact. Next time we speak about that project, they will say "But in my last email from march about that topic we agreed to..."

This is a problem. Because people stop thinking themselves and starting to offload their mental abilities to LLMs. Means if the LLM fucks up, they just don't know anymore. And can't even realize.

Things I never thought I had to do: Contacting t-online and asking them why they refuse to receive mails from my mailserver. (Spoiler: They want to force me putting my contact data openly on the internet because it might be important for them to IMMEDIATELY contact me about my mailserver.)

@nflux I have a performance problem wirh the TR8S which I need to improve either by training or a clever programing trick. Do you have an idea?

The problem is this: I have a section prepared where two synth samples are played. I switch to mute mode and one by one mute ride cymbal, then kick, hihats, rimshot, toms, snare, clap. Until only the synths and their delay echoes are left. I close the LPF for one synth sample, then mute it entirely so that only one synth is echoing through the room.

First day with the TR-8S. I love it! I'm finally getting the hang of the InstFX and the Reverb and Delay settings and started to replace instruments with Samples.

What I did so far is taking a Pattern slot in the last bank and start to modify a kit. But I'm not sure if that was the right call, I think I need to set up my own kit. I'm currently working on a set in combination with the TB-3 and start to notice that I won't switch instrument samples during playback. Nope, not happening. This means I should prepare basic patterns, each with its own kit containing the samples I want to use in that particular scene.

Means more work, more preparation, less improvisation during playback and different ways to fuck up, but the quality is incredible!

Todays highlight for sure: @Radgryd and her wife played RO and invited a random guy to their party who turned out to be my 9yo son, who was playing with my wife, who was in that particular moment on the phone with me while I was driving home from work. I heared him yelling "Maaam, I found some friends!!!" 😁

After watching #39C3 videos last week I decided that it's probably time to join #DIDit and remove dependencies to us-based or non-FOSS tools in my life. So I decided on a few long-term-goals, for example getting rid of Android and replacing it with Linux Mobile.

Tonight the US President ordered a military strike on Venezuela. From what I've heared so far he was not autorized by Congress to do so, but we will see how that unrolls. In the end this accelerated my personal need to remove those dependencies and as such I started writing up everything I use and questioning their worth for me. Turns out I have to let go a lot of things on my personal mobile phone and without Google Play the only messenger that I can use is Threema (which is one of the 3 messengers I have to use to stay in contact with my friends and family without using WhatsApp). There is no Signal in F-Droid and I know that their state about this was, that they depend on some kind of automatic usage and error reports which Google Play just provides and F-Droid doesn't.

This will be a lot of work but my first bottom line here is that we need solutions for this, lists for preferably drop-in replacements that can act as a guide for tech-sawwy people to clean up the tech stack of people who are not so hard into it but for example need to get rid of WhatsApp or Youtube just to pick out two popular issues that people are going to face.
