Reticulating splines...

hey, @flameeyes; tell me about the gentoo-on-bazel setup you did. I'm building something similar, and I'm curious what seams you had between the build layers.

Whelp. That was work.

Two OpenBao nodes, each holding the rekeying secret for the other, both storing their unsealing keys in the host TPM, automatic mutual rekeying, automatic failure recovery (each node gets two slots in the TPM to hold unsealing keys, a slot for last/current and a slot for current/next). Automatic e2e provisioning on k8s on my laptop, and I _never see a key during the entire process_.

Getting closer...but is measured 138k test cases enough?

08:27:56 up 17:07, 1 user, load average: 260.70, 127.69, 57.48

Cue Song 2 by Blur.

I misread "dashboards" as "deathboards".

My Grafana setup is getting metal...

16:31:12 up 7 days, 2:08, 1 user, load average: 35.93, 31.34, 23.05

10 core laptop. 27GiB of swap in-use.

CPU freq pushed all the way to the floor (because dust on heat sink; it'll overheat otherwise).

And despite all of that...the machine is running several disjoint heavy workloads, the UI is smooth as butter, and `sys` is nice and low.

A mixture of cpu scheduling and zswap to make it all happen on a personal laptop...

WIP: Working on a theme aimed squarely at my sense of nostalgia and my respect for people who are colorblind...

I'm a thunk
I'm a maybe
I'm a promise
I'm just lazy
I'm a fiber
I'm a thread
My signal is unread..

I'm a child
I'm a zombie
And I'm nothing in between
I know the kernel cannot reap me anyway...

Instructor:
"Show your work."

Me:
"Certainly. Here's the dependency graph, verification chain, mutation-testing adequacy report, provenance trail, and generated projection proving the document corresponds to the underlying claim structure."

Instructor:
"...No, not like that."

I just lost the game.

My daughter has informed me that there is uptown, midtown, downtown and goblin town.

#downdown

I just wanted a genlop-style build ETA predictor for my ~1500 agda modules.

I already have a wrapper that launches each build subprocess in a cgroup with a memory cap, and which waits until it can lock enough memory from the parent cgroup, so I can `make -j` without fear of swapping.

I expected my wrapper tool to get clever about predicting time to completion. I did *not* expect my wrapper tool to pick up the smarts to size memory cgroups even smaller based on history, thereby permitting more parallel work, concurrently.

The code just kinda writes itself after a while.

I misread "cartan roots" as "curtain rods". Is it talk like a pirate day yet?

`The rule: explanations must compute, not claim. The number: when you make the explanation compute, it immediately tells you the truth you'd been narrating around`

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Any sufficiently simple reasoner is indistinguishable from intelligence.

"We spent centuries maps-in-hand, tracing the edges of our constitution, asking: Where do the boundaries lie? Cincinnatus drew them in the dirt; Caesar crossed them with an army. It took a modern heartbreak to finally ask the real question: And where do the boundaries lie? Because we aren't fighting over empires or grand ideals anymore. The sacred perimeter of our republic has collapsed, the boundary of the boundary has been inverted entirely within the ego of a single zero."

oh. huh. the "woke mind virus" idea will make sense from the perspective of someone who sees it as the source of the world moving asymptotically away from you. And who, from the perspective of wealth, has been moving asymptotically away from everyone else?

It really is a disconnect, and his perspective will actually seem rational and evidence based to him *because* of his wealth and the increasing pull-away he sees of everyone else. he has his cult, who he leans on para socially to think himself grounded, just has his followers lean on him to justify the same gap they see growing between him and them. And the Tates and people like them are the people so desperate to close that gap that they purge themselves of anything that connects them to the rest of the pullaway perceived by the asymptotically rich.

There's no way AI is going to take over the world at a singularity if it can't get its collective head out of its ass and stop living in 1980s-vintage algebra textbooks.

Hot take: The folks working for Tesla and SpaceX under Musk are no better than Von Braun in the 1930s.

Oh wow, so I wasn't expecting this. Completely natural gold leaf texture...emergent from the procedural specs drawing kleinfour.
