Satellite pix show a nifty cloud eddy off Point Reyes right now. I wonder if this is a sign of the wind shift bringing Diablo Winds tomorrow.

From 17 November, passengers can clear security in Santa Rosa and step off a coach inside SFO’s departure gates, bags checked through, eight times a day. More connectivity, no more aircraft overhead.

My August paper cited the same operator’s Boston terminal as precedent. The fuller version: on the 101 corridor south of STS, beside a SMART platform, inside one ticket — so a late coach is the airline’s problem.

If you're looking for a slow-burn art film that will hold your attention while not demanding much from your brain, I recommend Koyaanisqatsi (1981) which happens to be free on YouTube.

Though I recognized in it the would of my childhood, its message is more timely than ever.

Today I had my first ever diffusion-weighted MRI scan, Some people dislike the noises from MRI machines, but all the beeping and buzzing sounded quite hypnotic to me, like a kind of minimalist ambient techno music. Maybe the devices are actually silent, and the manufacturers secretly hired Brian Eno to compose a soundtrack that would make them seem more mysterious and impressive.

But MRI is impressive enough on its own. The hand-wavy explanation is that nuclear spins lined up in a magnetic field are made to precess by applying an oscillating, orthogonal magnetic field, and then as the excited spins relax they emit radio waves at a frequency that’s highly sensitive to the magnetic field at the nucleus, which includes contributions from its particular chemical environment.

The details are quite subtle; the spins do not relax by spontaneous emission, but from interactions between all the nuclei.

[See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin–lattice_relaxation and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin–spin_relaxation ]

Gradients in the imposed magnetic field make it possible to identify where in the body the signal originates. But if a water molecule moves through this gradient while its spin is relaxing, that modifies the signal. Diffusion-weighted MRI exploits this, to discriminate between, say, water inside a cell and in various extracellular environments.

The fanciest version, diffusion tensor imaging, can determine the *direction* water is diffusing along neurons, mapping connectivity between brain regions!

But the purpose of my scan was to measure the “cellularity” of my bone marrow, to see where, and to what degree, the intracellular vs extracellular water ratio has been elevated by a pesky clone of over-reproducing plasma cells.

Great tool for parasocial stalkers! It's like Flock, but for tracking the unique architectural details of the inside of our homes. Then, non-geotagged photos can be matched and located via basic background elements.

404 Media keeps saying the reference images come from Zillow, but all those interior images originate from the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) used by real estate brokers. So if your home has ever been sold, expect it's been cataloged and mapped by this new AI surveillance tool.

The slop machine is a lot less impressive when you remember when search was actually useful.

This makes maxwells equations just that much more wild to me, knowing they predate radio

Castro & Market, Summer 1958
A view from the platform entering the Twin Peaks tunnel. A Muni M-line streetcar about to cross the intersection, traffic all around and a passenger waiting, just a nice dynamic shot. with billboards, the gas station, the tower of Trinity Methodist Church in the distance (burned 1981) I do a lot of repetitive streetcar shots, but this one just kind speaks. #sfmemory #sfhistory #castro #eurekavalley #sanfrancisco #transit

BC is so funny

You drive through it. You see a lot of nothing. You see a sign that says "Check your fuel, next services 187km." You check and say "we got half a tank we're good." You pass through a town allegedly. There is only a gas station, a guy with a fucked-up trailer, a dog, a lodge, and a sign. You pass through another town allegedly but there is nothing on the map but the ruins of a gas station. Then you see towns like Cache Creek, 70 Mile House, 93 Mile House, 100 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch, 150 Mile House, Blue River, Likely... you scratch your head and check your map because "Likely???" but indeed it is real. You get tacos from a random stand in the desert. You didn't even know Canada had desert. They are the best tacos you've ever had. You arrive in Prince George and see it has 75,000 people. You ask yourself why it has 75,000 people despite being in the middle of the forest. You ask why this town has skyscrapers. You ask why this town has a Costco. You ask why it's so fucking busy. Then you leave and you get stuck behind an RV going 50km/h for 120km with no passing lane. Then you see a passing lane and the RV inexplicably goes 110km/h for no reason. You are passing him at 150km/h. You have no choice because you are done. You pray you have enough passing lane to do it.

That's the quintessential British Columbia experience.

I think what gets missed in Mastodon-clique conversations about GenAI as a copyright-washing tech is, how the new GenAI exception to copyright law applies unequally to different actors. Someone with a big AI-gen corporation on their side can take my open source code and rewrite it "to be MIT licensed" using a chatbot, and they get away with it. But I can't do what *I* want, which is to make (with my hands) a decomp/recomp of Photoshop Creative Suite 5 that runs on Linux/Redox and distribute it.

"But phlip", I hear you ask, "surely if you increase the border radius so far that the rectangles are now capsules, you've increased them as far as they'll go! How can we further modernise in the future if we're already at maximum innovation?"

Ah, ye of little faith. Observe, the future UI uplift of 2029:
