9pm on a wednesday is definitely the time to decide you really need to port one of your programs to Windows 3.1

spoiler alert: you'll be porting it forward

Learned today that the reason one of my servers in the lab has been acting flaky is that it has nine failed fans, which raises a number of questions, including how many fans does this thing even have?

I went to an ASL class public social this evening held in my town by the teacher at the local uni. She’s a Deaf woman whom I’ve known since she was in high school. In fact, I’ve known every Deaf person who showed up tonight for a minimum of 20 years. One, I’ve known for almost 30.

Interacting with the students took me back to my first year at the uni, when I met my very first group of Deaf friends. 1989, y’all! I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun.

On top of all this, I’m married to an amazing woman who encourages my association with the Deaf community. Jen gets it, and she gets me. I’m grateful.

Social science has answered a lot of questions that we keep relitigating anyway because powerful and privileged people don't like the answers, most of which implicate them.

Thinking back to early in my career, sitting in a meeting room with print outs of code and a highlighter, with the goal of deleting us much of it as possible, because everyone understood that each line was a liability, and a drag on every outstanding requirement.

*sigh*

@sarahjamielewis I had that .. debate with some senior Microsoft people in 2004.

They were bragging about their new huge IPv6 stack, and how they knew how to write secure code now.

Narrator: They did not.

I love the idea of tiny houses and wanted one for the longest time.

I still want one, but these days they have wheels, and not from being built on a trailer.

I am very much on board with tiny house ranch polyamory, but with the added trick of letting anyone who leaves keep their house.

One of my colleagues described me to a visitor as “the closest thing our department has to a real-life Ted Lasso,” and that’s a compliment I hold close.

Been thinking about switching to NetBSD because they reject LLMs and now someone in my mentions is saying that NetBSD is still using CVS for their version control and I'm like no… no that's too much technology rejection

@mayintoronto @skinnylatte Y’all are making me hungry for papads

@mayintoronto I’ve had a client call me a “wordy bastard”. Forty years later we’re still friends

I had been avoiding to go into my art studio so I didn't have to face my "inner voice." Today my artist friend invited me to her studio to paint together. Turns out that she also lost her husband in January, and we talked, while painting. This is something I wasn't able to do, even with my closest friend. Better than a therapy. This is one of four tiny gouaches I painted today; all from a memory.

@mayintoronto @icastico @swelljoe also I (not so) secretly have two other accounts about other topics (gardening/fiber arts and punk/zines!)

We don't deserve oats

@mayintoronto "You know. That dude."

😊

@mayintoronto You're hired!!!

I often look to traditional Nigerian pottery forms for inspiration. The pot on the left is a vessel from the Nupe tribe. I’ve read as extensively as I can about how they may have been used by it never makes sense to me. First of all, the pots are quite large, no less than 40 inches in circumference, so very heavy to pour from—and the narrow neck makes pouring even more difficult. I address this by making mine a smaller handheld size with a spout. #Nigeria #AfricanArt #pottery #ceramics
