This is huge!: #OpenAI lost a copyright infringement case in a lower German court for using popular song lyrics in its #ChatGPT language model without paying royalties.

I hate to say "I told you so", but I did warn against this, and it should not come as a surprise. The Norwegian intelligence service recently introduced a mass-surveillance system, scanning all electronic communication crossing the border, without much protest (except form our data protection agency, who nobody listened to).

Now it's been revealed that they have abused this system by storing more data than they were allowed to: https://www.nrk.no/norge/eos-utvalget_-e-tjenesten-lagret-data-ulovlig-1.17649553

Can't wait for the next stage of this, when it's revealed that the data has been leaked to hackers by accident or something 🤷

We need to stop "trusting" that our authorities will take care of our privacy.. It's quite simple: The intelligence service just want to do their job as efficiently as possible. They'll always want to take as much of our data as they can, if it can make their job simpler. WE need to set the boundaries.

Why do so many people here seem to believe that verbal abuse is an effective way to convince other people to use the open source tools and services you they want them to use? 😅

I have been convinced by other people many times before, but never through insults or verbal assault 🤷

Pro tip: If you see someone here announcing their presence on Bluesky, Telegram or whatever, you want them to be elsewhere, try asking nicely! If not they'll just leave the Fediverse as well.

Does anyone here have experience writing shaders for #unity that work with both URP, HDRP and builtin-render pipeline?

The "new" RPs use different includes and have different alternatives to ObjSpaceViewDir, etc.

So far I have concluded that the best solution is to:
- Create one volrend.hlsl with the main shader code, where it conditionally uses builtin shader functionality or URP/HDRP versions based on a "#if USE_BUILTIN_RP" definition
- Create 3 separate shaders, one for each RP, that include the volrend.hlsl (the builtin one first defines "USE_BUILTIN_RP".
- When creating the materials, choose the appropriate shader.

This is madness, but are there really no better alternatives?

I suddenly got an issue where starting up the terminal (on Ubuntu/KDE) would take several minutes.

Turns out .bashrc had a thousand copies of these lines:

export PYENV_ROOT="$HOME/.pyenv"
export PATH="$PYENV_ROOT/bin:$PATH"
eval "$(pyenv init --path)"
eval "$(pyenv init -)"

How did that happen? 😅

Just learnt that #Fossify has great open source alternatives to the default #Google apps on #Android, such as Phone, Contacts, Files, Messages, etc.

Today I was called 二货 ("erhuo"), which means "fool" and which I realised sounds very similar to the #Japanese word 安保/アホ ("aho").

So I assumed that must mean アホ comes from 二货, right?
But no, turns out アホ comes from Classical Chinese, and 二货 is modern Chinese slang.
So then that must mean 二货 comes from Japanese instead?

But that doesn't appear to be the case either.. So are they just similar in meaning and pronunciation by random?

Help me!

I wonder how much safer traffic would be if drivers had to take a mandatory theory test every 5 years and a driving test every 10 years 🤔

I need to write a several pages long document for work. My boss recommended me to try out the built-in Gemini for refining and rephrasing text.
I actually had big expectations, because if there's one thing that LLMs are good at then it's this kind of work.

But I'm honestly quite disappointed 😅 I asked it to rephrase my sentence to not use any parentheses, and it threw up an identical sentence where it had simply removed the text inside the parentheses..
And when I ask it to rephrase somethings, it starts making up stuff and writing things that's completely wrong 🤷

Just for comparison I tried asking Le Chat or ChatGPT to do the same, and they did a fairly good job.
Why is Gemini so popular if it's this bad?

I just discovered https://european-alternatives.e

This website is really nice! It lists European alternatives for various digital services and tools.

Thanks for making this, @european_alternatives@mastodon.social ❤️

My 4 year old daughter when she's hungry: 肚子饿了, 我的魔法会消失! ("My stomach is hungry, my magic is going to disappear!")

They should add this sentence to Duolingo :D

Reminder! :panda_raisehand: If you're a human being and you're still on #DeviantArt you may want to try out #Cara instead.

Nice and friendly community, much like DeviantArt but without the stupid #AI.
https://cara.app

How an art community for artists can survive, despite working towards making artists obsolete in favour of low-quality genAI, is a mystery to me.

Microsoft: "Hey, we made silly AI Thing. Interested?"
Me: "No thanks"
Microsoft: "Try GitHub Copilot now! 1 Month free trial!"
Me: "Still no"
Microsoft": "HERE, JUST TAKE IT OKAY?"

By the way: @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de exists!

#Chinese learning: So since #Duolingo seems to only cover the first basic levels, I've been trying to find some other apps that can help me study Chinese for 5-15 minutes a day.

I did find one that fits my needs qute well. It's called "SuperChinese", and covers HSK1-5, and there's supposedly more in development. I find it more organised and less random than Duolingo, and it requires me to speak more.

AFAIK it's free, unless you want to use some of its AI features that I honestly don't think I'd want to use anyway, and those are quite expensive.

But if anyone else has any suggestions, please share!
I just want something that lets me learn new words and grammar, review stuff I forgot and practice reading and speaking, ideally in 5-15 minute sessions. And with content at least up to HSK5.

Sometimes I wonder if there's a connection between my habit of always running/jogging when moving around (even indoors) and the fact that I played a lot of Final Fantasy as a child 🤔

We need more research on this.

I have an infected toe, so my daughter wanted to play doctor and patient with me. Apparently I had a thousand degrees fever, and she had to remove all my teeth.

And I was pregnant... with a cat.

Incredible what toe pain can be a symptom of!

I originally thought it wouldn't be my kind of game, so I postponed playing it, but Witcher 3 is *really' good for learning Chinese!

Lot's of (voiced) dialogue, dialogue options that actually matter (so you need to make sure you understand more or less what's said), many side quests..
And then there are these random posters/letters that you find on the notice boards in all the towns, some of which lead to side quests, while others are just completely random, but often fun (yesterday there was one warning you not to eat cats as it brings bad luck).

The non-important NPCs could be more interactive though.. but at least they talk a lot, so again great for language learning!
