Turns out it's just not auto starting. It starts fine from address 20. Now there's just matter of getting some dials and switches to play the game.

If you want to play Pong on the emulator, you're still unlucky - it doesn't work!

A LINC (working) is on display in Maryland.

"One of the candidates for the first personal computer. $43,600 in 1962. Used for biomedical research. Operating System written by a young woman who lived in Baltimore. If you are lucky, you may be able to play “Pong” on this unit!"

Thanks to @spacehobo for pointing to this video of a LINC playing the BACH music on the tape. I have listened to this so many times the past few days. I'm glad to confirm the emulator sounds just about the same.

You can play both those games freshly built from original source code here:

Someone (not me) is doing an IMLAC computer in Verilog. He's animating a photo of a real front panel to control it.

The IMLAC was popular at MIT for running the game MazeWar at the Dynamic Modeling group. The same people went on to write Zork on their PDP-10.

I asked Mary Allen Wilkes about the origin character, she replied:

"Why not? I needed a unique character that had no other function."

When divine intervention is urgent, God sends an acute ... angle ... angel.

You don't need to tell me this is a bad pun. I shouldn't have more encouragement.

There is no separate tape controller, it's reusing the CPU logic. So when the tape loads into memory, it's using the CPU address register. This produces a quick regular beep for each tape block, with some silence in between.

I want 62°, which is the right angle?

I started on a tutorial, so no one has an excuse for not playing with the LINC emulator.

⊟ is called the "origin character". It's used by the assembler to indicate the address of the next instruction. However, no one today remembers why that symbol was picked.

No one is quite sure why the LINC character set includes the ⊟ symbol. It's on the red key on the lower right. There are some vague theories, but I think they are just origin myths. #LINC #jokes

I added a separate window to display the sound signal.

It's really satisfying to hear tape blocks being loaded with a trilling sound.

You can turn the audio switch to listen in on a bit in the machine internal address register. It's a great way to hear the machine work. I'm reminded of hearing the faint elecromagnetic interference on the TV from the home computers of the 1980s.

Updated my LINC emulator with support for the speaker and audio switch. The user can select between a few different signals from inside the computer to go to the speaker.

There are tapes with music playing software and a bunch of songs from the mid-1960s. I will not post a screenshot because the screen is blank. All the processing power goes towards playing audio which leaves nothing for refreshing the CRT display.

"Margaret Hamilton's life’s work was recognized with many awards and honors, including the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, whose citation noted: “Hamilton defined new forms of software engineering and helped launch an industry that would forever change human history. Her software architecture led to giant leaps for humankind, writing the code that helped America set foot on the moon.”"

Do your parents know you're playing C++ which is rated PEGI-45?
