This is the first genuinely operational littleFedi instance.

It has been online since 1st July, is single-user (just me), and runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD, directly on its SD card.

It consumes just under 1W.

Its database is this size:

-rw------- 1 little wheel 109289472 Aug 26 15:14 littlefedi.db

That is, just a little over 100 MB. Yes, MB.

Its average CPU load is extremely low.

It is perfectly usable both from the web interface and from Mastodon API apps.

I have 401 followers and 169 followings, and it doesn't bat an eye.

I promise myself to use it more, and I will.

You don't need Big Tech to communicate with others.

You don't need an expensive data center to exist online.

Because we are people, and the bits are just extensions of our voice.

EDIT: littleFedi allows to transform posts into blog posts, having its own SSG (Static Site Generator). The one generated by this post is reachable by clicking here.

I beg to differ: I have promoted someone for finishing an asset inventory. That’s the single most useful baseline for security governance there is. It’s foundational and its absence makes multiple other things impossible.

"The people holding up the internet"

A good-looking but somewhat depressing exposé about the people holding up current digital infrastructure as a hobby.

This instance won't last forever, please start planning your move to another instance before it's too late

Back in March, the folks at @7ASecurity performed an audit of #Incus. The details and report are now publicly available!

Is there a #WoodCarving community on Fedi?
Not talking professionals who earns a living, more like people who like to cut wood with a knife for fun.

Please renote for further reach!

Body camera footage shows police surveillance abuse is common: "We’ve told them over and over again: 'You see a hot chick, you don’t look them up in a database.'"

A journalist wanted to go to a Flock Safety convention.

Flock cancelled their registration AND got the hotel to cancel their room.

Enter Benn Jordan and *some equipment*, 😉.

I haven't had that much fun with a YouTube short in a while.

This is a neat bit of tech. It's an e-paper display, which can be updated wirelessly. And it has no battery!
During programming, it's powered by the same NFC signal from your phone that's programming it. And since it's e-paper, it doesn't need power after that.

🔴 A defense contractor is now selling technology that scans every electronic device in your car as you drive past a camera. It ties everything to your license plate. You cannot opt out.

It is called SignalTrace. Made by Leonardo, an Italian military contractor with existing U.S. Special Operations Command contracts. It sweeps your phone, smartwatch, Bluetooth headphones, your dog's RFID chip, tire pressure sensors, your car's infotainment system. Anything that broadcasts.

It bundles these into what Leonardo calls your "electronic fingerprint," timestamped and geotagged. Stored in an "Enterprise Operations Center for future queries and analysis."

Those are their words. Not mine.

You did not consent. You cannot opt out. Your devices broadcast by existing. In most places, this is perfectly legal.

If this sounds like something that will be abused: it already has been. Police have used existing license plate reader networks to stalk partners, verify school residency, run background checks, and monitor protests. At least 22 officers charged or resigned for ALPR stalking.

SignalTrace does not read your messages. It does not need to. It knows who you travel with, where you go, and when.

Google recently informed OEMs of greatly reduced security support for older releases of Android. For the vast majority of discovered vulnerabilities, only Critical severity issues deemed to be an imminent risk will be backported at all and only to the most recent 2 major yearly releases (16 and 17).
