@toxi Coordinating with other people was always the hard part of open source software. Now that so many people feel that agents make coding so easy that they don’t need to collaborate with anyone, they are skipping that hard part. The long term effect is social atomization in yet another domain ☹️

Single Use Software is a great phrase and way to think about this! Some other alternatives I'd like to offer:

It's the NIH Syndrome (Not Invented Here) gone hyperviral & mainstream:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_invented_here

It's also the Lisp Curse supercharged (which equally applies to Forth, IMO), i.e. the disconnect between extreme expressive power, coupled with lacking skills/talent/constraint, turns problems that are mainly technical into social problems:

https://www.winestockwebdesign.com/Essays/Lisp_Curse.html

And finally, to paraphrase the great Alan Perlis:

"An AI/LLM/Agentic programmer knows the value of everything, but the cost of nothing."

(May we add: "...including social/environmental costs". Also, not even sure about the "value" part, since the overall direction is towards 100% delegation...)

"The single factor most responsible for this riot of experimentation is transparency - the ability of any user to render into source code the choices made by any other designer. [...] When faced with a Web page whose layout or technique seems particularly worth emulating or even copying outright, the question "How did they do that?" can be answered in seconds."

"The transfer of the interface from 'something that resides in the software and is applied to the data' to 'something that resides in the data and is applied to the software' is the single most important innovation of the early Web."

I've got an old MacBook pro. Might be fun to try to revive it with a new OS. What's the consensus these days?

"Autonomous systems are presented to students as a kind of aesthetic ideal. An 'end to end' system is a triumph. Requiring human supervision is a defect, and even the way human involvement is generally discussed – e.g. “human in the loop” – often presents the human as a temporary inconvenience. Peter Thiel refers to this in 'Zero to One' as 'the ideology of computer science.'"

New #blogpost! You guessed it—it’s about #Scheme, my perfect Scheme:

Bon alors je découvre que dans les 700 papiers de maths d'OpenAI, y en a un qui consiste à prouver que le formalisme de la DFT ne peut pas représenter une molécule pas physique (nombre de protons indéterminé et seulement 3 électrons) dont une des charges électriques se situe à une distance des autres supérieure de plusieurs ordres de grandeurs à la taille de l'univers.

Merci OpenAI. C'est vraiment du temps de calcul bien utilisé. 45 pages de sciences utile.

From that perspective, an LLM-based system can continue to build upon what mathematicians have written so far, exploring the convex hull of the space of their writings so far (which may yield new combinations that we could consider creative), but one could expect this to diverge significantly from what researchers, who are in contact with their object of study, would find. Much like you wouldn't expect physics to get ahead based only on what's written so far, without additional experiments. 2/2

A thought about mathematics and genAI (sorry), but I haven't seen this point expressed yet, so wanted to share.

According to Platonism (in the sense of Gödel), humans discover mathematical truths by developing a kind of quasi-sensory relationship with their abstract object of study. This suggests an interaction that is quite similar to how we interact with physical objects: they're objectively there, independent of us, and we discover their properties through our senses. 1/2

Today is FORTRAN’s 70th birthday; its reference manual “appeared in a glossy cover, handsomely printed, with the date October 15, 1956.” https://softwarepreservation.computerhistory.org/FORTRAN/paper/p25-backus.pdf

(The actual software wasn’t released till the following year)

No longer fashionable but still, one of computer programming’s biggest success stories. I tip my hat.

And you can call this oversensitive, feel-good "woke" nonsense if you want, but I've got the data and I'm right: a code of conduct, community standards and moderation enforcing them, the psychological safety of your community, these are near term competitive advantages and long term survival necessities. Treating the process of getting involved and the experience of staying involved in your community _as a product_, worthy of usability testing and ergonomic refinement, that moves the needle.

This whole thread about holding community is great, but the "atrophy of humility" really got me. I've seen so many projects (and people) fall into that trap over the years.
