You know I'm pretty sure the first real political belief I had was "copyright is wrong". If I remember correctly, when I was 18, it was the only strong idea I had.
I was so deeply convinced copyright was wrong that I was willing to question anything that made it seem right. I kinda reinvented a sort of leftist belief system from first principles.
"But copyright is what enables licensing deals which are fundamentally how companies make money with art" 👉 "well then maybe the pursue of profit through art is wrong"
"But profit is necessary to fund these groups, like sure people can make art in their bedroom but it'll only go so far, it's necessary to afford artists a living" 👉 "if markets can't value art that's free then markets are a bad system, and therefore capitalism is wrong."
"What else can we do other than capitalism?" 👉 "well, if art (and also software) ought to be collaborative, driven by the need to do something good for the world instead of personal profit, maybe we could apply a similar system for tangible resources. We could help each other out instead of pursuing money. Such a system would recognise intangible contribution by artists and developers, and they would have no reason to want to dictate who can enjoy their work."
Anyway it was still kinda wishy washy until I met other leftists and that's when I really radicalised. But the roots were there!
