Like, seriously. So much localised flooding now.
Everything is so flat here, so there’s just nowhere for the water to quickly drain away to as more constantly rains down (and it’s currently low tide: it’ll be worse later if this rain continues the way it is).

Anyway, it’s pretty great news that JPEG XL support will be shipped in all the major browser engines very soon!
The past few years have seen the broader tech industry doing some pretty whack/questionable/wasteful stuff, but this is one piece of unequivocally good news.
Smaller image file sizes for everyone! (and most existing JPEGs can be transcoded losslessly into smaller JPEG XLs)

As an aside, Photoshop’s JPEG XL export could still use some work. My two main gripes:
1. Its highest lossy quality setting doesn’t produce output that’s as good as the reference encoder (for some reason its 100% quality level equates to a quality “distance” that’s much worse)
2. Its progressive encoding doesn’t do any saliency detection, which is the truly cool part of JPEG XL progressive encoding (it allows the most important part of an image to be rendered first as it loads)

And in case you want to see what the JPEG XL support looks like in terms of the feature tests created for web-platform-tests, here’s the link:

RE: https://mastodon.social/@firefoxwebdevs/117150334970891788
WebKit/Safari released support for JPEG XL years ago, but now Firefox and Chrome are close to shipping it as well. They both use the newly completed jxl-rs Rust-based decoder that supports many format features (like progressive decoding) that Safari’s decoder does not.
Hopefully Safari’s decoder won’t now just sit unimproved for years. Progressive decoding and animated JPEG XLs will be very useful.

This wind and rain is really something.
It’s been raining non-stop for the past 3 days and now it’s even heavier, with the wind more like a typhoon! 🌀

Anyone who says that the climate hasn’t changed and/or isn’t changing is trying to tell you to not believe what you already see, experience and know to be true.

FYI, if you use #Firefox you can now enable #JPEGXL support to try it out (without having to fiddle around with any tricky settings):
Just go to Settings > Firefox Labs > and enable the “Media: JPEG XL” checkbox.
It’s good to see that it’s another step closer to being enabled by default!
#Safari / #WebKit has had support for about three years (but doesn’t yet implement progressive loading), and #Chrome has it behind a feature flag, but not much has happened recently. Getting there, slowly!
