I already have the new “Accessible UX Research” book by Dr Michele A. Williams, classics such as the „Web Accessibility Cookbook“ by @matuzo, and “Inclusive Components” by @heydon and having an eye on the “Practical Accessibility” course by @SaraSoueidan 👀
If you’d have some education budget to blow before end of the year, what #web #accessibility related things would you spend it on? 💸
Any #courses, #books, etc. to recommend? (Conferences excluded unfortunately)
#A11y question about #ScreenReader
Is it best practice to insert punctuation when using aria-describedby/labelledby with multiple IDs, when the referenced content has no comma or full stop at the end?
2 approaches I’ve seen:
1) aria-describedby=“newPrice commaID oldPrice” where commaID is a span containing “, “ and additional white spaces with ::before and ::after
2) populating a separate span with all the content, add in punctuation, then reference only the ID of this new span.
WDYT? 🤔
One of my highlights of the year is always the #HTMHell Advent Calendar curated by @matuzo, containing an article daily on security, a11y, UX or performance, written by authors from around the world.
There is still plenty of time to catch up on previous days' articles, so go and check it out to learn something new each day until Christmas!
Cloudflare is down again? I guess some can start into an early weekend then 😬
Still free tonight? Join me for my talk "Access Denied: Being left out by Design" 🎙️
In response to d*sign week's central question, 'For who(m) is the making?', this talk illustrates how design and development choices can unintentionally hinder access. Providing an introduction to the fundamentals of accessibility, attendees can discover how small adjustments have a significant impact.

Simplified Accessibility Testing, right from your browser?! 💡🔍
I designed and coded this little landing page to showcase all the #accessibility browser #bookmarklets powered by #CAAT and created by my wonderful team here at mindscreen.
Take a look: https://tools.caat.report/
Perhaps one of these bookmarklets could be integrated into your #a11y #testing process? 👀
What is a #browser #bookmarklet?
A bookmarklet is a tiny app that you save in your browser's bookmarks bar, without the need to install anything. When you click on the bookmark, it adds functionality on the current page. Yes, it's that simple!
How do we solve this?💡
1. Use different icons for each option.
2. Write the word instead of relying on an icon (e.g. 'vegan').
3. Use colours that are more distinguishable from each other with good contrast, in addition to text or icon variations.
🚨 And please, never use colour as the only option for conveying information and distinguishing a visual element, regardless of whether it is online or offline 🚨
🧵 3/3
I don't know why, but I always seem to end up at restaurant whose menus have #color and #contrast problems 😅
So, this time for Ed. #3 of what seems to be a mini-series now that I'll call #ContrastAndKetchup, I present a menu where colour is the only way to distinguish between the vegetarian and vegan options. Green is used for vegan and brown for vegetarian. The icons themselves look identical aside from the colour.
What's the issue here? 🤔🚫
🧵 1/3
1. Using colour alone as a #visual #indicator is not a good idea as many people won't be able to read the menu correctly. 🚫
2. With this specific colour choice in particular, it becomes almost impossible for people with red-green #colour #blindness to read the menu. 🚫
3. The paper chosen to print the menu has a rough texture and a light brown colour. Combined with the dim lighting in the restaurant, it is almost impossible to understand the icons. 🚫
🧵 2/3
And yes, for the eagle-eyed amongst you: The 'Vegetarian Carbonara Pasta' turned out to be vegetarian, even though it uses the vegan icon. 👀

Because I just heard it in a conf talk (again):
🚨No, the #EAA is not just WCAG 2.2! 🚨
➡️ The European Accessibility Act (EAA) covers #digital and #physical products and services, such as websites, apps, ATMs, ticket machines and more.
➡️ Rather than referencing WCAG versions directly, the EAA aligns with the European standard #EN301549. Currently, it officially incorporates WCAG 2.1 (Levels A and AA) but is in the process of being updated to WCAG 2.2 in 2025/26.
So all comments I reported, even the one where he calls me a b*tch, “do comply with our professional community policy and won’t be removed”. Thanks LinkedIn, great job! 🙃
It only took one LinkedIn post that received far more exposure than usual for men with extremely big egos to appear on my page and post aggressive and arrogant comments berating my title, competence and empathy while calling me a maniac b*tch.
This is not what I expected, especially on LinkedIn. But well, here we are. 🥴
I love that #accessibility is now a topic at meetups, since the EAA came into effect 😍
Today, I'm at the ReactJS Meetup in Barcelona, listening to a talk about quick accessibility wins. On Thursday, I'll be at an UX meetup, listening to another accessibility talk.
There is a lot of interest, and people are taking lots of photos of the slides. This gives me hope 😁
