Shady had his first real vet visit today. (He got fixed shortly after capture but wasn't handleable until a couple months ago.)
He's not happy but he did great! Didn't even growl. Just grunted a lot. He goes back in a few weeks for vaccine boosters but he's generally in great health.
He hid for a while when we got home, but ate his churru when he came out. He's acting "normal" now (meaning he's yelling at us for watching tv and trying to make me live in the hallway.)
I suspect he's never had a thought he kept to himself. At first he whispered and muttered and grunted to himself, but now he meeps and beeps and yells out loud. Constantly.

I'm tired of projects saying "like it or not, AI is here to stay." The last thing that was "here to stay" was NFTs. Before that, unregulated cryptocurrency. Keep going and it's coal plants. Before that, "nobody will ever use electric cars." Keep going back far enough and it was the divine right of kings. Nothing is "here to stay" unless we choose every day to keep it, support it, fund it and use it.

Now that Pocket ID has decided to ship slop (buried in the middle of the changelog of course) is there an alternative lightweight OIDC authenticator? Preferably one that doesn't, you know, ship slop?

I was having good luck with Authentik, but it failed the "lightweight" rule. (And it was a nightmare to manage. Plus the end-users much prefer pocket-id.)

I broke out the PS2 recently and have been playing it for the past week or so. I remember really loving the console menu with the floating crystals and the sound of waves crashing.

I was looking at it today and it occurred to me for the first time (it’s only a 26 year old system :| ) that there are twelve crystals and they are in a circle just like an analog clock.

I pointed this out to my partner and they pointed out that one crystal was lit up and it was where the 9 is on an analogue clock and we were in the nine o’clock hour.

I kept looking at it to see if minutes were represented somewhere, but couldn’t see anything obvious although the rotating orbs looked like they had some pattern that might be related to seconds.

Played some Gran Turismo for a bit with the intention to check back in the 10 o’clock hour, and, sure enough, the tenth crystal was lit up. It was almost 10:30 and the crystal was about half lit and my partner and I wondered if the amount the crystal was lit was related to the minutes, so I rolled the system clock forward to 10:50 and then only about 1/10th of the crystal was lit.

I thought this was really cool as I had always thought they were just pretty shapes that didn’t mean anything when I was a kid and it was cool to see there was meaning behind it.

My partner also pointed out that the spinning orbs all joined together at the 60 second mark and seemed to fly past the current hour.

I looked it up online and apparently the number of visible orbs at any given time represent the lowest common denominator of the current seconds out of 60, so 60/60 is 1 so 1 orb, 30/60 is 2 so two orbs, 20/60 is 3 orbs 15/60 is 4 orbs and 10/60 is 6 orbs.

I love the PS2

It figures. I have been running both #ntfy and #gotify for years, just too lazy to fix up the last couple of items and pick one. Last week I settled on #ntfy instead of #gotify, got the last couple items switched over, etc. The next day, they proudly take in a huge shitpile of LLM code. "Well-tested!" Then hotfix after hotfix..

Are there any third options? This seems like the sort of space that #OSS should shine but somehow doesn't.. I just want a decent notification app.

Just completed my first two carbon fiber prints: a benchie for testing and a reverse camera mount for the Jeep. Two prints, zero fails. I think I'm gonna go for three and put the camera slightly more forward. (It's super wide and sees the spare tire.)
Here's a cheap microscope view of the filament. Nicely coated, no loose fibers. (Same when I checked Benchie and a purge line)

If you are a #Backblaze customer, I would strongly recommend emailing legal@backblaze.com to ask about their credential leak.

Hey #backblaze! What other company do you think leaked that specific email address? Show your reasoning please.

I hate this passive "someone else must have done it" bullshit. Look carefully at the address they sent to..

Sunday Funday! This stackoverflow question may have just solved months of "why the fuck does my cluster get super wobbly after 10 nodes or if I add another app?!?" (NGL, I'm gonna miss that site.)
I have been blaming the storage unit, even though every single metric I can see says it is under-utilized. CPU, network, volume, per-disk, everything can (and occasionally does) sustain 5-10x the background load for hours without issue or latency.
According to that link, agents can wobble in and out of availability due to a low default connection limit on the servers, triggered based on the number of objects on the agent and random luck.
That exactly describes this. It has good days and bad days and I've never spotted anything useful in the stats or logs when it bombs.

While we are all mad at #bambu for being evil, here is a quality of life improvement for anyone stuck with one of their units. Hopefully it improves your day. (Also, it makes it much easier to get along without their spyware.)

The printers' MQTT broker only accepts a couple of connections. 4 I think. This is an issue if you (for example) use a slicer(1), home assistant(2), xtouch (3), octoprint (4-5), nodered(6+), etc.. And once you use them up, you have to basically turn everything off for a while (up to 12 hours! in my experience) before you can start connecting again.

Using this, any number of clients that use pure MQTT (or handle failures appropriately) can be multiplexed to the printer over a single connection. xTouch, OctoPrint, everything.

Here in the DC burbs, hell has officially started freezing over. Hail with a touch of freezing fog has already put a quarter inch of ice on the sidewalks. Next up is several inches of overnight snow to make it properly atrocious for Orange Fartypants.

Oh and of course we got bitten by the #whoogle block along with everything else. It worked out, switched the local search to SearXNG and it has been great. Didn't even need to reinstall in the browsers.

Damnit. Bambu labs just went the way of Chamberlain. From sorta-closed to walled up tight.
Anyone wanna buy a locked down spyware printer?

Congrats to #Prusa I guess.

I need printing ideas, but I'm out of filament. What should I print out of a ton of TPU? It is mostly overture, some generic, and there is even most of a spool of sainsmart 95A in there. I just have no idea what to do with it. Each one has had a few prints off it, then stored in a dryish box.
I'll need to dry it before printing, and I dare not shove it through the AMS, so manual color changes only. I've put together a modular-enough drybox setup over the years though, so swaps are pretty easy.
I even have enough PETG to do hybrid prints.(Half of these colors are left over from when I jelly-fied the bottom of some PETG desk organizers to build non-scratch coasters into them.)

I do not know why the Home Assistant developers foster such a hostile environment, and I really hope it doesn't push the whole ecosystem backwards again. (This new legal entity seems like a very bad sign to me, but I've had entirely too much experience with "corporate" open source.)

The "Cool Kids" clique has managed to negatively impact everything. Did you get kicked out of HACS by a malicious request? Too bad! Found a simple easy-to-reproduce bug? File an excellent report, and sit back until stalebot closes it. Oh but you have a patch? It got rejected! Don't worry though, because there is a decent chance a Cool Kid will copy it and submit it as their own. Did you find a security issue? Oh no! File it quick to protect everyone! Too bad they will tell you it is invalid, and then later they will post-date the notification so they can give tons of public credit to a Cool Kid instead.

And these are just incidents that I am finding by accident as I try to use and contribute to this fucking mess. Almost every time I have to deal with the core ecosystem it turns out that the bug is old. Usually someone else already tried and got shit on (or ignored until the robot says "fuck off you don't matter".) Sometimes I get unlucky and it is my turn to get the stinky end of the stick. Usually I don't bother anymore.

This is not about scale. This isn't even about #stalebot, although of course stalebot helps gatekeep by ignoring the Cool Kids. This isn't about misfiled tech support "bugs", or about improper disclosure. This isn't about "that mean person told me my code sucked." This is purely about the "Us vs Them" gatekeeping bullshit.

I originally wrote this out with a bunch of examples, but every third word being a link to a bug or blog (or both) took something away from it.

Is #tvheadend the best I can do for an open #DVR? Don't get me wrong, I love tvheadend. It is pure magic. I literally used to dream of something like this back when we were inventing portable Linux. But the DVR experience is so very bad. Jellyfin and Kodi can interact a little, but even that is awful outside of basic playback.
