scientists in my lab want to figure out citation gender bias in citations of papers they're writing. one tool they found is https://github.com/dalejn/cleanBib which does work, but requires an external "gender API" which guesses gender (and race, oooof) from names

i don't love using a guess based on name, but it turns out to be relatively accurate. anyone got any ideas or hints to improve this?

[cleanBib needs full first names in a #bibtex file to do this, and social scientists Do Not Love LaTeX... it would be nice to be able to just paste in a list of DOIs or a references section]

every time I spend $0.15 to send an "email" to someone in Wisconsin prisons, I am fueled that much more to tear down the punishment machine and build new systems of care

RE: https://social.coop/@majdal/117332870234185210

fuck this shit

fuck the cut-rate batman villains propping this up, and everyone who capes for them

we must build societies that have strong immune systems against the psychotic desire for punishment that capitalism and sociopaths traumatize us into

if you are reading these words and thinking "but what can I do, I have no power over this":

1. that's their desired state for us to be in.

2. there are so many things we can do, get in touch.

forgot about Austin TV, but their KEXP set from their new album is NICE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIq0Q87k9pM

starting to realize that the 9th grade music teacher i loved was working in Friere-style pedagogy to co-learn from us while passing on a number of key learnings (and interdisciplinary learning styles) of John Cage and the Fluxus movement, in a tiny town where everyone thought she was super weird for actively learning as she taught

that year in her class was pivotal in turning me into who i am

rest in power Mrs. Becker!

recommend me your favorite Menippean satires written or well-translated to English, finishing Bakhtin on Dostoevsky has me wanting to do a Menippean winter phase

if you live in Wisconsin, Sierra Club wants people to call Evers and DNR Secretary Hyun and "ask" that Enbridge's Line 5 reroute permits are revoked.

personally, i think we should be DEMANDING that Enbridge is kicked the fuck out. if we want a chance to mitigate climate harm, we need to stop allowing shitty corporations to recklessly endanger our Earth.

i admit i'm confused about the openai math story this week

are the smart math-doers really expecting the Companies That Are Based on Stealing to not steal the things they input as prompts??

are people still that naïve about these extractive corporations?? believing the words in their terms of service and the bullshit in their "constitutions" or whatever the fuck??

come

if you've never talked to someone who's been through it or read a first-person description of force feeding, you might not understand why it's torture. people on hunger strikes know it's going to come to that torture, and they still stand up for themselves and others... much respect

and shame on the doctors and bureaucrats obviously

but I save more shame for our society at large because we allow bullies to apply these techniques on the regular to people in our prisons and jails, we have normalized this, and it's fucking despicable

#MadisonWI we're hosting a FOIA/records request rodeo/teach-in thing on Monday: https://actionnetwork.org/events/awg-foia-teach-in

(and I want to recommend some short reading, hopefully with a few different perspectives)

anyone got #zine recommendations for using records requests against the state from an #abolitionist #anarchist or otherwise troublemakin' perspective?

[boosts welcome]

some folks in my lil abolitionist circle are pushing for free communication for people in the jail, a good example of non-reformist reform in my opinion! https://captimes.com/opinion/guest-columns/opinion-gouging-inmates-for-phone-calls-doesnt-promote-justice/article_d5b8b677-c3bc-4752-ba3e-1699d214fdef.html

begging everyone I know to get at least slightly familiar with the contours of the Prairieland case. that shit's coming for everyone who has problems with fascism (which is hopefully all of us)
