Morning Fediverse!

OpenAustralia Foundation is running a bit short of the dollars. They do good work. Please consider. https://oaf.org.au/2026/10/13/this-library-is-running-out-of-money-here-is-how-to-keep-it-open/

Actually, some corporate types should get into this.

The software engineer pipeline isn't a pipeline but rather a pulsejet. We are in the exhaust phase.

If senior software engineers are just using AI surely y'all should be only hiring juniors?

Morning Fediverse!

Data:
- LLMs are killing the planet
- LLMs are raising utility prices
- LLMs are raising computer prices
- LLMs give you teh dums
- LLMs show negligible increases in net productivity
- LLM costs are going up
- LLMs run on stolen content
- LLM companies keep breaking laws and saying, "Oopsie!"

Open Source maintainers for some reason:
- We are debating our AI policy, but it's a tough decision. *whines*

Dudes. WTF is wrong with you?

@stufromoz I should organise a comedy fringe flashmob thing involving this happening at a whitegoods retailer in Bourke Street Mall or something. And point everyone to @daedalus Redbubble shop to buy stickers for their own kitchens.

Just letting people know we've opened up registrations on bne.social (with approval) again. If you know anyone from #Brisbane or anyone Brisbane-adjacent send them our way. Let's just hope we can keep the LLM agent spam sign-ups at bay! :) https://bne.social/auth/sign_up

It turns out the processes and techniques I was taught as an undergrad and Trainee Engineer in the late 1900s are still useful and relevant.

You need to reevaluate your priors. The fridges are so powerful now, and what was true of refrigeration a month ago simply isn’t now. If your fridge isn’t connected to the internet with a known admin password, and can’t heat up to 50°C you’re going to be left behind.

Back in my day we had fridges that heated to 50° but that was because the grow lights were incandescent

I have Beyoncé in my head singing “if you liked it then you shoulda put a sticker on it” while dancers in leotards whack cyber rating stickers on all the kitchen appliances.

Put me down as someone who thinks the phrase "Digital Twin" is buzzword bullshit indistinguishable from a "model".

@fsvo I would like posterity to record that I think that the powers that be are fucking cowards for conceding this ground to the software developers who have collectively cried that "it's just too hard!" to test software properly.

Shodan search: html:danfoss product:"nginx"

The supermarket impacted today in France put all of their devices directly internet facing and all had the same password, today’s date.

Sure, you might have assessed the CyberRating™ of your Internet-connected fridge and/or freezer, but did you put a label on it? https://cybersecure.eigenmagic.com/

Regarding the Danfoss fridge thing doing the rounds in the media - there’s several thousand of them that are directly internet facing.

The username is admin and the password changes every day automatically to.. the current date.

Every single one is like this. You can just log in and change the temperature. Anybody can do it, easily scriptable.

Howdy! I have a client that's hiring a data engineer (ideally with Snowflake experience, but they'll take anyone smart enough to figure it out) in Canberra.

I can arrange for the automated screens and the like to be skipped, and the interviews will not have any leetcode-style nonsense. I've placed someone else with them who is very happy, and they're an inclusive team (i.e, I've seen them hire a woman to a senior role)

I also don't understand if I'm using this hashtag right 🥲
