there's so much to say here, and I feel like it'll be ignored by the ones I'm trying to reach with this, but I have to try;
frontier models are slowly but surely getting to the point they're consistently outperforming even very experienced developers (I have 25+ yrs myself).
this is going to affect *everyone*, sooner or later.
we need to work together also on the open/offline models, unless you want this entire thing to be vendor-locked to big tech.
I don't really know how to open this subject, because I know a lot of people feel strongly about it, and I'm not here to stomp on their souls.
but I really think the fedi echo chamber is missing that LLM usage is in fact growing, and not disappearing like a lot of people seem to hope for. writing dunk-y posts about how bad it is is only going to appease people who already hate AI.
please. we need proper regulation, not wishfully hoping it'll just pass.

and yes there are exceptions to this rule, but they don't apply to the americas, european or oceanic or (most) asian countries; unless you live in north korea or whatever you DO have a choice.
Politics is inherently shit. It's always a compromise between you and the people who do live in your country but you don't agree with. And if you don't vote, they will decide for you
look idgaf what you think about the options you have when voting, but if you didn't vote you don't get to complain, simple as.
if you do that you'll just look a chronically upset spoiled toddler to me, that is having "the worst day EVER" because their favorite icecream wasn't available, so they opted to have none of them as an "act of protest" and will riot about it the rest of the week and break random things. I will literally just tell you to go to your room and learn to compromise

I don't get why so few people put smoking/burning power banks in a tub of water (on air planes and honestly in general).
it's the same thing we do with smoking/burning EVs; it cools the battery cells and stops the reaction, and contains the smoke and fire. The water doesn't cause problems the runaway thermal reaction hasn't already caused.
It seems silly, but if you have a battery that catches on fire, AFAIK the best thing you can do is to dunk it into a bucket or tub and fill it with water.

like are you serious, leaving a gap between the extractor hood motor and exhaust because you want to use the wall socket? why not just.. cut the wires and connect them directly? now water and grease gets to soak directly into the exposed half-open wall socket

and note that I'm not saying open = consentful, or that most models are consentfully trained, because honestly consent and licensing in training data is one of the biggest outstanding issues, and we need people to stay clear on this issue towards politicians.
Suno is probably one of the best examples there, with v6 being entirely trained on licensed data in collab with the music industry, and older models are no longer available.
