Well, the Clevis fix was easy:
boot.initrd.clevisLuksAskpass.enable = true;
boot.initrd.clevisLuksAskpass.useTang = true;
Job done. Now her PC boots into a logged in Niri session without her needing to enter any passwords.

I've been fighting with Mom's PC lately, trying to get her NixOS system to automatically log her in after boot. But GDM was just not playing ball, it kept complaining that the session's not found, and other bullshit like that.
I had enough of that today, and went nuclear: ripped GDM out, switched her system to greetd + tuigreet with autologin, and voila, works on first try.
Now to fix Clevis - though I might postpone that, they can enter the LUKS password on boot for now.
When I first learned about CollapseOS four years ago, I thought that it's a very cool concept, but did find the idea "you'll have to implement from scratch everything in your computing stack" very disconnected from the reality. Like, what kind of plausible scenario could there be that one won't be able to get system software for their computer that they could trust to be of safe origin, free from backdoors and malware, and fit for the purpose, I thought.
Ha-ha.
Well I finally got out to see #thisOldClownHouse and dang I need to hang out with the fedi clowns more
The downside of applying with ryoms is that I'll have to change the license from FHH to something else (likely EUPL) that is OSI compatible, because NLNet requires projects to be under an OSI-approved license.
I might... I think I'll dual license. Not very useful in this case, apart from sending a signal. And that allows me to license auxilliary stuff as FHH-only.
I'm building a bridge over the creek to get the mower across. Digging holes for all the stumps is hard work, particularly with the occasional floaters germane to being close to a water stream.
But the last hole was by far the easiest! I'll jot it down to improved technique and increased strength from the first five.
The difficult thing is... I'd also like to submit a proposal for the next round of NLNet founding. I can't submit one based on iocaine, because that requires a roadmap past iocaine4, and that's not something I'll have until after the current NLNet-funded project is much further along.
My other options are ryoms (my spam filter) or my distro. But I'd have to push both to a state where they're somewhat usable by other people, before the November 3 deadline.
So... I think what I'll do, is that I'll push ryoms further whenever I need a break from iocaine.
I'm going to shelve distro work for a while, and re-focus on iocaine, now that the NLNet funding is rolling.
I'll still probably toot about distro stuff, but expect more iocaine content for the coming months.
I love being able to use filters. I have a couple1 of accounts blocked, but toots mentioning those still appeared on my timeline. So I made a fun little "Slop" filter, listed a couple of those there, and my timeline's free of them completely.
Being able to curate my timeline is such a great power to have. Love it.
Understatement of the year ↩︎
the FOSS we imagined was real. otherwise we wouldn’t have all imagined it.
but the people who promised it to us have all failed to protect it. all of the systems and all of the protections we were told about were worthless.
all of them are currently trying to accomplish the switch portion of a bait and switch. but they don’t represent us or our labor unless we let them.
My feed did a thing and I LOLed 🤣🤣🤣 @TheBreadmonkey @juergenlibertus @me
I was assured now that they'll get on it soon. Good. I'll update this thread when there's more news.
Four months ago, I asked the SFC to assign copyright back to me for any future Debian contributions I may make. They asked for some time, because people were on leave, and events were coming up, and so on. I said sure. I had - and still don't - have any plans to contribute to Debian anytime soon, so it's not very urgent.
However, four months later, my standing copyright assignment to a pro-LLM entity is in stark contradiction with my stated very much anti-LLM values. While I am in process of exiting tech, I haven't fully done so yet, and this is starting to hurt me, I have to explain it to people, and point them to this thread. It sucks.
So I emailed them again today, asking them to assign my copyright back as soon as possible.
Person toots about wanting to use NetBSD drivers for their microkernel in a couple of years. I hit follow.
I'm easy to please.
The SFC is not our ally, and has not been for quite a while.
One of the biggest disappointments in recent years for me.

Is MCP becoming the common foundation of smart, decentralised search?
If you're searching for utter nonsense, yes. Though I'm failing to see how it'd underpin anything smart or decentralised.
Also need to figure out how to soak it better in coffee. I can barely taste the coffee.
The hardest part of the recipe is getting rid of the apple seeds, and that entire middle part of the apple. We did not have adequate equipment at hand, so I sliced the apples, and then carefully removed the center of each slice.
That was time consuming, but... not too much.
Overall, I consider this experiment a success, will repeat again, and will consider further #CookingCrimes in the future, too.
