Bundle all of this up with some cute post-ironic generic branding, you know that Howlin Wolf style basic text on a plain background, and you've got something that invites invites investigation.
(attached for example of the style I mean, but not actually this exactly.)
The network would operate like a franchise system, providing equipment recs and access to a variety of films to members, along with rotating programming suggestion, marketing assets, access to merch and concessions wholesalers, and unified branding.
The benefit to the small cinemas is predictability. The benefit to the filmmakers is one submission for dozens of theaters.
So basically the problems with launching a small movie theater right now are:
- What equipment do you use?
- What movies will you show?
- How will you market them?
and the problems with distributing an indie film right now are:
- Getting into major theaters is basically impossible
- Getting into small theaters is a one on one conversation
A lot of these problems can be addressed by a network/community organization providing distribution and resources and advice to small theaters and pop-ups.
This is a small bit of centralization, but it enables a high degree of curation and reduces the burden for starting a small theater or pop-up.
There's a couple of other ideas, but that's the core.
@ajroach42 nah I think you got the point of dune
Should I re-read dune?
@trixter ahh, that IS one of the places I've read about but haven't seen in person!

Still one of the best engineers that ever worked with me, but sometimes I wonder what kinda brainworms he's living with.
When I was a mid-level manager at a fairly well known tech company, I had a kid working for me. New college grad, super clever, one of the best engineers I ever worked with.
He left to work for an NFT/Crypto startup. I warned him, when he left for a crypto startup, that this was frequently a front for fraud/financial crimes.
I found out the next day that his father was one of the most well known financial criminals in US history.
Three years later, he used me as a reference when he was applying for funding from a VC firm for an AI startup.
the fact that none of the bots trying to sign up for accounts on linernotes manage to mention anything thematically appropriate in their scripts seems to indicate that the fediverse viewed from the outside is a bunch of homogeneous entirely interchangeable independent frontends and like that’s just so not true but also it’s okay if people have to wade into getting a more nuanced view of the landscape in my opinion. but the bots can go to hell.
Can I cook or can't I
Sometimes problems solve themselves, I guess
A "programming language" is a computer program that creates a multi-gigabyte folder somewhere inside ~/.local and never tells you about it
I'm tired.
In conversation with Sundog earlier, I accidentally nerdsniped myself into thinking deeply about the economics and distribution models of grindhouse and drive-in theaters in the 70s and what it might look like to bootstrap a network of independently operated theaters in the US today.
Before I knew it, we had names, branding and iconography, and a marketing plan.
I don't have time to do this. I haven't even managed to do the first screening in our popup theater yet.
But it's the only thing I'm thinking about right now.
Anyway, funny story but remember when the discussion was about The Cathedral and The Bazaar?
There's a second axis to that graph, and it's ends are labelled "A Community" and "A Cult".

Alright, so it looks like I'm going to pursue #shareware #livestreaming.
I believe we'll stream on the Community Media Peertube and Twitch concurrently, unless someone can give me a good reason not to do that.
I can probably rig up a bot of some kind to bridge chat between the two platforms, or I can have a third chat platform that I'm paying attention to and a bot that bridges both of them into the third?
I dunno.
(This is a thread, in this thread I ask for advice about livestreaming. I'd appreciate it if you reply with personal experience, and not with conjecture.)
And we have, to paraphrase MC Frontalot, a vast network of subversives and criminals right here.
We call it the fediverse.
We can use it to distribute films! (I already do that @video )
And there are a lot of empty buildings, and cheap projectors are widely available (and near cinema quality projectors are reaching the home market) and ...
I dunno.
Grindhouse was a mediocre double feature film released in 2007, but we could do something a lot cooler.
