So "ID required" laws for social media that compromise everyone's privacy due to data leaks and lock LGBTQ kids out of information have LITERALLY ZERO impact on safety?

Not on the news: Bernie Sanders marched to the polls with 600 students in Houston. Students are heavily voter suppressed in Texas, as is Harris County (Houston) in general.
Now is the time to leave it all on the field. Not only for the results but because it beats the hell out of sitting around nail biting.
The right-wing owners of Scientific American, once the pillar of science writing, have ruined the publication's content and reputation. An incredibly sad situation: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/scientific-american-springer-nature-trump/

Dolly Parton's sister, Stella Parton, says that a voting machine in Tennessee repeatedly switched her selection to Republican Marsha Blackburn, so she had to correct her ballot paper three times before she could vote. She's not alone. Other voters in Tennessee have reported similar issues while trying to vote for Democrats.
The quietest cities aren't created by chance.
They're designed that way.
Beyond its long-term sustainability commitment, Zaragoza is tackling one of Europe's most overlooked environmental challenges: noise pollution.
Instead of reacting to noise issues after they happen, the newly designated 2028 European Green Capital is building quieter neighbourhoods and green buffers right from the start.

3 lata temu Sebastian Majtczak rozpędził do prędkości ponad 300 km/godz. swój samochód, w którym usunął fabryczny ogranicznik prędkości, dzięki czemu drastycznie zwiększył moc auta.
To maksymalny możliwy wymiar kary.

When considering Elon Musk's actions and attitude towards Ukraine, it's always worth remembering who has helped him get money.
In The Netherlands you have around 8.5 million households with a combined load of around 8GW of electricity. There are 200 new datacenters planned or under construction and they demand 15GW capacity. From an electrical grid that is already struggling. This is all getting ridiculous.

You may say it's a conspiracy theory but Waymo is arriving in Toronto and we have this master plan to dismantle our bike lanes happening at the same time
Waymo has issues with San Francisco bike lanes https://futurism.com/future-society/waymo-bike-lanes-traffic
We start removing our bike lanes in #toronto the same day Waymo puts their first cars in the streets for testing (plan to rollout by 2028)

Two thirds of October has not even passed yet, and we had following PR (or bigger) crises in floss:

Anyone remember vrms? It was/is(?) a silly program to audit your installed deb packages to see if you have anything non-free installed.
I think we need a "vantifa". It would audit your installed packages for things with known far-right ties and display the receipts. And being how much stuff now is not installed software but saas/webapps, I think it'd be useful to have it also audit your browser history and report the same for sites you visit frequently.
Canadian Man Creates DIY #Flock-Style Cameras That Only Scan #Police Plates And For Some Reason The Cops Are Annoyed By This
It's funny how the moment the cameras are turned on them, police are suddenly worried about their their own movements being tracked, and how such data could enable "bad apples" to stalk them. You know, just like police have been caught doing to innocent civilians time and time again.

Holy crap. Today I learned about a #Dutch phone provider, that "records its users and has it analyzed through #Claude"
But now, they're also going to record the person that is being called. WITHOUT INFORMING THEM.
And, according to the CEO, this is within the legal boundaries of Dutch law.
WTF?
If that's not a violation of trust, I don't know.

Dostęp Policji do monitoringu gminnego wymaga jasnych regulacji prawnych.
Prezes UODO Mirosław Wróblewski skierował do MSWiA pismo sygnalizujące potrzebę stworzenia regulacji prawnych dotyczących dostępu Policji do monitoringu prowadzonego przez jednostki samorządu terytorialnego.
Wątpliwości organu nadzorczego budzi również stosowanie przez Policję i straże gminne monitoringu z funkcją rozpoznawania twarzy lub umożliwiającego analizę innych cech biometrycznych.
