Alright, which of you #monsterdonians drives the car I saw this sticker on

windows 11: "THIS VERSION OF WINDOWS IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED! YOU NEED TO GET A NEW VERSION!!"
me: "...the fuck? it's windows 11, what do you mean not supported??"
Microsoft: "Oh yeah, so you've probably not updated when we released one of the other main releases, so uh, we can't do it automatically for reasons yeah. definitely not our fault that your pc didn't update like it ought to have. You need to download a media tool to update it."
me: "...uugh, fucking FINE"
InstallHelper.exe: "Yeah you need to run the PC Health Tool to make sure the pc you're running me on to repair windows 11 can run windows 11. Come back when you done that."
me: "...okay, weird, but... okay..."
PCHealth Tool: "OOP Sorry this pc can't support windows 11 because it doesn't have enough harddrive space!"
me: "WHAT."
PCHT: "Yeah see, you need at least 60 gig, but you've only got 1000 gig available on this PC. sorry. Can't run windows 11, so I guess you're stuck with Windows 11!"

how have we allowed this.

In reviewing my research notes for a SIGGRAPH interview, I'm surprised at how accurately I determined the who and when of the UNIX V4 tape.

Before we had any supporting documents with the tape, I had to look elsewhere. My best source was a list of the first UNIX users outside of Bell Labs, which lists Martin Newell of the University of Utah as #19, but does not have any dates. To estimate when the tape would have been made, I tracked down the other institutions' histories and UNIX license agreements from their archives. This was tedious, but it was the only way I could narrow the timeframe. I determined that UNIX was likely licensed for the U in June 1974.

After determining that, a letter was found among the same papers as the tape, from Ken Thompson to Martin Newell, apologizing for their delay in sending the tape. It was dated 31 May 1974. Then, once we recovered the tape's data, the file system showed the tape was copied on 12 June 1974. Wow.

Vampire Crawlers is absolutely stellar btw. Thought I'd best mention since I've been playing it lately... like... a LOT.

So you know how Vampire Survivors is the videogame equivalent of highly addictive drugs without (most of) the terrible side effects?? How it's a full on high-impact, perpetual dopamine generator?

One downside of it is that at a certain point it just becomes an idle game. Sure there's lots of deep strategy to building TO that point but once you get there it's just... like... waiting the timer down and/or seeing just how silly it can get, or to see if you can get powerful enough that the game breaks, crashes, or explodes your computer - whichever happens first.

Vampire Crawlers iiis not necessarily that. The strategy is much more of a thing, even late into a run (at least before you get to Endless mode which is a recent update I have not yet unlocked). It requires more thought and careful planning, round to round, but DAMN if it isn't fun as hell. :D Great game.

Some years ago, I needed to get an visa for urgent travel to China, a process that required me to fly down to SF and stand in a very long line at the Chinese consulate. When I finally handed the woman there my forms, she promptly stamped them and said "you need to take these to Window 2", pointing around the corner. So I walked around the corner...

...where *the same woman* swiveled her chair around and proceeded to check the stamp that she had just applied.

I would have been annoyed if I wasn't in so much awe at discovering the purest form of bureaucracy.

Random memory address access:

there was like, a period a long time ago where people were making entire songs using windows 9x sounds (usually the startup sound) as a main sample. Had only heard a couple before, decided to try and find one of the ones I really liked, found way, WAY More that people had made.

...

they're better than the one I originally heard way back when lmao.

aw dangit the doomwiki is down how am i supposed to find all the secrets in auger zenith now when the Diamond Dragon gameplay mod makes the map basically useless for finding them e-e;

Critter Cove is pretty great tbqh. It's def jank due to early access but it's very... chill. like what if animal crossing but you don't gotta be a boring ass human at the start (i'm bein a bnnuy ) and you get to sail around to different islands and swim in the sea to collect salvage. it's pretty nice.

oh also you gotta help rebuild an island community apparently. some fucker named renard scammed you into being his contractor but there are nice people on the island so it's cool. plus it's a cool little island.

...why the fuck is sand so difficult to find. there are beaches everywhere, WHY CAN'T I JUST DIG THAT UP FOR MAKING GLASS WTF
