Was reminded of this classic, and decided it needed an update:

How it feels when someone has "AI" "review" your work without looking at it themselves.

> Any efficiency increased during the actual coding phase, the study authors find, is “absorbed by downstream constraints in the production process”; as “the code review process significantly increases in length, pull requests are more likely to require revisions, and reviewers leave more comments.”
Either your Sr. engineers become burnt-out bottlenecks, doing the work another human should've, or they check out and slop gets deployed to production.
Ask me how I know.
Reason number [cartoonishly spinning counter] not to use/trust "AI":
The corporations who want you to use it have a glaring conflict of interest. It's actually *great* for them if AI "accidentally" accesses and uploads all your personal data. "Oopsie!" they say, as they face no consequences."Should've disabled that setting!" they say, as they sell your private conversations to advertisers and the government.
Pop quiz:
Does this #Rust unit test pass or fail?

"The tests are theater".
Goodbye TDD, hello TDT - Theater Driven Testing.
I have seen this professionally. Hundreds of lines that test that the data that was passed into mocks comes out of the mocks. Tests that test nothing important. Or don't test what they claim.
But if you say "Hey, these tests look pretty useless, let's delete?", someone will chime in with "Tests are good! We want code coverage!"
Rather than argue, it's easier to just delete the tests when some refactor breaks them. 😮💨
I saw someone recently comment about LLM coding agents: "Now that writing code is no longer the bottleneck..."
The only time writing code was the bottleneck was when I was a Jr. Engineer or had recently switched to a new language. The real bottlenecks are figuring out *what* to build and what tradeoffs to make to get there.
This post puts it into better words than I've been able to:

This, plus account portability, were things I had in mind while developing #diskuto

This thread talks about going back to an #ActivityPub users's home server to validate a user's content, because you can't trust that the event you got for it is unmodified.
But you can't trust what the home server tells you the content of the message is either! There's nothing stopping a home server from serving a modified version of your content every time it's requested, say, to inject ads into it, or censor bits it doesn't like.
Or to just completely fabricate new content from you.
So I'm looking at options for doing some basic HTML parsing in #rust
I found html5ever made by the Servo project, but can't figure out how to use it. I check their docs. Aha, you need an implementation of TreeSink which is not provided by the crate. Their example docs use markup5ever_rcdom.
I go to read that crate's docs, and it's a stern warning not to use it – it's only designed for testing.
I settle on some other library for parsing.
… later, I learn that under the hood, it's rcdom. 🤦♂️
I did some googlin' for #smallweb chats (IRC/Discord/whatever) and didn't find any, so I made one. Come hang out and say hi if that's your kind of thing!
@aral 👋 I was reading https://kitten.small-web.org/tutorials/end-to-end-encrypted-peer-to-peer-small-web-apps/ today and saw mention of the "Small Web Protocol".
So I visited https://small-web.org, but … its SSL cert just expired. ⚠️
I'm interested to read more about this "Small Web Protocol", and key exchange. Is it mostly this?
https://kitten.small-web.org/reference/#reserved-small-web-protocol-routes
Kitten looks pretty nice!
Some ramblings on "The Small Web"
https://www.nfnitloop.com/blog/2025/07/smallweb/
I wrote a browser for #gemini text that works over #geminiprotocol AND HTTP(S).
It was a great way to learn some #egui in #Rust, but mostly I wanted to demonstrate that you can have nice things on HTTP too. 😉
Let me know what y'all think!
I released my tool for serving #gemini text over http.
https://jsr.io/@nfnitloop/gemi
It’s very simple. But that’s partly the point.
#smallweb #projectgemini #geminiproject #geminiprotocol #gemtext
My Windows 11 computer updated itself last night. Today, I was using Git (via JJ-VCS) and it launched notepad to edit a commit message.
AND MICROSOFT HAS ADDED AI TO NODEPAD. It has logged me into my Microsoft account and put AI into Notepad. It briefly popped up something about AI blah blah data access blah blah… I tried to get a screenshot but it disappeared before I'd read everything.
SteamOS for Desktop when?
Thoughts on Project #gemini
Last weekend I published a fun little project that allows you to use the #Rust library #Ratatui to make a #TUI (Terminal UI) in #JavaScript/#TypeScript, via #WASM.
https://github.com/nfnitloop/ratatui-wasm-backend
That repo contains an example app, which you can easily run with #Deno, which keeps it entirely sandboxed from your system. Here's a quick screen recording:
https://asciinema.org/a/8Ljb2Tkp9SyujJpaDjMKBadGw
Let me know if you build anything fun with it. 😊
At work, we're looking for the next book for our "Engineering Book Club".
I'd love to recommend something like "Java Puzzlers: Traps, Pitfalls, and Corner Cases", but for #TypeScript instead of #Java
Does such a thing exist?
This is the MVP for the UI rewrite, rebrand, and (re?)organization.
But I'm continuing development. Next things in mind are:
* Re-adding a few things that were skipped for the UI rewrite.
* Updates to the tool for syncing posts from Mastodon.
* Browser plugins to simplify signing content.
If you're interested in trying it out, please let me know! 😊
This includes a v1.0.0 release of the core API/protocol:
And a new github org:
https://github.com/diskuto
The UI has been (mostly) rewritten to be standalone and easy (I hope?) to fork in case people want to experiment or make something that looks nicer. 😊
