My Nana was a similarly formidable spirit! :-

“Granny’s implicit belief that everything should get out of her way extended to other witches, very tall trees and, on occasion, mountains.”

A slightly different pic this evening - I saw this double (look closely & you will see the 2nd one) rainbow not long after the sun came up this morning … it almost made getting rained on worth while!

As we watch the end of Western Civilisation slowly unwind before us like a bad BBC producition of ‘Play for Today’ it’s good to know that the Hitchhikers Guide has this to say about such events :-

“Important facts from Galactic history, number two:

(Reproduced from the Siderial Daily Mentioner's Book of popular Galactic History.)

Since this Galaxy began, vast civilizations have risen and fallen, risen and fallen, risen and fallen so often that it's quite tempting to think that life in the Galaxy must be

(a) something akin to seasick — space-sick, time sick, history sick or some such thing, and

(b) stupid.

Douglas Adams — Life, the Universe & Everything.

Good evening Squirrel Fans.

I bumped into a couple of old colleagues in the gym today & tonights quote illustrates the kind of problems I had trying to have a coherent conversation with them! :-

“Arthur shook his head in a sudden access of emotion and bewilderment.

"I haven't seen anyone for years," he said, "not anyone. I can hardly even remember how to speak. I keep forgetting words. I practise you see. I practise by talking to ... talking to ... what are those things people think you're mad if you talk to? Like George the Third."

"Kings?" suggested Ford.

"No, no," said Arthur. "The things he used to talk to. We're surrounded by them for heaven's sake. I've planted hundreds myself. They all died. Trees! I practise by talking to trees. What's that for?"

Right - well I’ve done the tree quest in Starfield so off to find some other plants to attepmt conversation with!

Tonights’ quote reminded me of my childhood bedroom which had a carpet that stopped just short of the wall & allowed a much younger & more inquisitve version of me to listen thru the cracks in the floorboards to my parents chatting the kitchen below! :-

“It’s quite easy to accidentally overhear people talking downstairs if you hold an upturned glass to the floorboards and accidentally put your ear to it.”

@NormanDunbar this must have been where that AI found that reference to your, as yet unpenned, Pico book! Hopefully you will not be eaten by an aligator before you have chance to write it! 😁
:-

“No other library anywhere, for example, has a whole gallery of unwritten books - books that would have been written if the author hadn't been eaten by an alligator around chapter 1, and so on. Atlases of imaginary places. Dictionaries of illusory words. Spotter's guides to invisible things. Wild thesauri in the Lost Reading Room. A library so big that it distorts reality and has opened gateways to all other libraries, everywhere and everywhen...”

Having braved the aisles of Costco™ this afternoon this quote seemed somehow appropriate! :-

“It is generally thought, on those worlds where the mall lifeform has seeded, that people take the wire baskets away and leave them in strange and isolated places, so that squads of young men have to be employed to gather them together and wheel them back. This is exactly the opposite of the truth. In reality the men are hunters, stalking their rattling prey across the landscape, trapping them, breaking their spirit, taming them and herding them to a life of slavery.”

I gotta get me some of this coffee! :-

“Klatchian coffee has an even bigger sobering effect than an unexpected brown envelope from the tax man. In fact, coffee enthusiasts take the precaution of getting thoroughly drunk before touching the stuff, because Klatchian coffee takes you back through sobriety and, if you’re not careful, out the other side, where the mind of man should not go.”

It has to be said that this is up there with how the driver of the snowplough gets to work in a blizzard & how Fabergé got the chickens to lay those fancy eggs!

“I’ve always been a bit puzzled about that story. What’s so hard about pulling a sword out of a stone? The real work’s already been done. You ought to make yourself useful and find the man who put the sword in the stone in the first place, eh?”

Sometimes context is everything! :-

“By gor’, that’s a bloody enormous cat.”
“It’s a lion,” said Granny Weatherwax, looking at the stuffed head over the fireplace.
“Must’ve hit the wall at a hell of a speed, whatever it was,” said Nanny Ogg
“Someone killed it,” said Granny Weatherwax, surveying the room.
“Should think so,” said Nanny, “If I’d seen something like that eatin’ its way through the wall I’d of hit it myself”

Tonight’s quote refers to Granny Weatherwaxes ability to temporarily borrow a creatures mind, however I find that I have this problem pinning down my own thoughts sometimes!

“But a human mind is a great sullen lightning-filled cloud of thoughts, all of them occupying a finite amount of brain processing time. Finding whatever the owner thinks they’re thinking in the middle of the smog of prejudices, memories, worries, hopes and fears is almost impossible.”

This evening’s quote sounds like me when I’m down the gym! :-

I was trying to think of a pithy comment to make about tonights quote, but rhetoric was never my thing :-

“Things are different here, sir,” said Carrot. “It wasn’t until ten years ago they replaced trial by ordeal here with trial by lawyer, and that was only because they found that lawyers were nastier.”

It is said that the Discworld once perched on the back of 5 elephants but that one, after a drunken night out with the gods, slipped & fell :-

“No one actually saw it land, which raised the interesting philosophical point: When millions of tons of angry elephant come spinning through the sky, but there is no one to hear it, does it - philosophically speaking - make a noise?”

Given the state of play in the UK & the US & indeed increasingly the RotW one has to suspect that someone back around Y2K discovered the answer!! :-

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”

As AI makes technology more & more unusable I wonder if a return to the humble notepad is not in order! :-

“He had a notebook. He took notes in it. It was always useful. And them Sybil, gods bless her, had brought him this fifteen-function imp which did so many other things, although as far as he could see at least ten of its functions consisted of apologizing for its inefficiency in the other five.”
