Oh well, watching some lunatic speedrun Portal glitchless, keyboard only

Aw man, I'm tired.

Maybe haven't fully bounced back from that late night. Or this is taking more out of me than I expected. Or both.

I think I say this every year, but it's really not worth it, I don't think.

I've got a new watch, an early birthday present from mum.

I really like it, only I can't figure out how to get the clasp open again to get it off my wrist. And all the videos etc on the subject are about how to adjust the clasp to change the length. I've actually managed to do that successfully, now I just can't figure out how to open the clasp again.

Hope I don't need a screwdriver! Also because I don't want to damage the finish...

WHY ARE THERE TWO CLIPBOARDS ON LINUX? WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?

WHY DO I NEED TO GO INSTALL MORE CRAP IN ORDER TO SYNCHRONISE THEM?

For fuck's sakes!

Also, lol, for some reason Make can't find clang, but my shell can. So I keep having to run Make and then paste the command into a terminal... very silly!

Ok, cool, so apparently I need to be using clang to compile bpf programs instead of gcc.

That's great and all, but now I'm getting the same errors gcc was giving me: complaints that structs and whatnot are being redefined.

For instance
/usr/include/bpf/libbpf.h:1883:6: error: redefinition of 'libbpf_tristate'

Like, I assure you, there isn't an error in the bpf library. And I thought it was perfectly cromulent C to redefine things as long as the definition matches?

Anyway, what do I pass to clang to tell it this is all fine?

High five from a random skateboarder as I was rollerblading the other direction. That was nice!

Well, a bit of good news. Freespace is working (including my HOTAS!) thanks to a fan rewrite of the engine. Good stuff!

Fun to be flying an old space shooter again.

....except my stick isn't being detected. Of course not. 😑

Got FalconBMS working with VR! 🥳

Apparently all I had to do was select OpenXR instead of SteamVR.

Ok, cool, one problem down. Now to rebind all my keys.

(Still haven't fixed the MFDs yet, but I've got a lead on that to pursue when I have the energy).

More than 20 years ago, I played a MUD where, when you typed text to other players, it would automatically capitalise the first word of the first sentence - and only the first word.

I have no idea why, but this permanently changed how I type whenever I'm typing a message and not really thinking about it. I drop the initial capital, but hit that shift key for any subsequent sentences.

I didn't even play the MUD for all that long! But I can remember crystal clear adapting to that pattern and then never changing back. I don't get it at all

Is there anyone on here who does metal fabrication for a living, who wouldn't mind having a chat about what it's like?

Like, welding, machining, drill presses and routers and lathes and press brakes and whatnot?

(Boosts welcome)

Edit: oh wow, that's so many replies! Thank you!

I realised I should have asked my main questions in this post, and I think editing them in should ping people who replied. So:

1: How'd you get yourself hired in the first place? What are entry-level roles like?
2: Do you find you have to lift a lot of heavy stuff? I sort of have the impression from watching How It's Made that overhead chains and pulleys and motors get used a lot for moving around the thing being worked on, but I've also seen a job posting saying you need to be happy to lift 25kg.
3: what's the average day like?

No, I don't want to make an account to download your no-cd crack for an abandonware game.

Yes, I swear I'm not using a disposable email address (I am).

No, I don't want to secure my forums account with MFA.

NO, I DON'T WANT TO BE REDIRECTED TO THE "USE MFA" PAGE WHEN I GO BACK TO THE DOWNLOADS PAGE ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Maybe this will help. I hope so...

A month or two I bought a new mattress. It was fine in the showroom.

It is not fine at home. Much harder, so hard that my hips get sore sleeping on my side. Worst, if I lie on my front or my back, I feel like I can't breathe.

This morning, it feels harder to breathe even on my sides.

Absolute hell.

Supposedly there's a break-in period. In the meantime my sleep has gone from bad to worse. I'm only just barely functional. Hanging on by my fingernails.

This suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks
