Only got an 8 on my BBPS, I'm ashamed

One of the things that really seems to saddens me by not being able to have a sensible discussion of the impact of #llms / #llm on software development that goes beyond either “they suck” or “maybe they don’t suck but using them makes you a fascist” is that we are failing an entire generation of current early stage employees or students or just kids interested in software. If they use ChatGPT to create a piece of software, they get confronted to a mass of irate developers on the one hand openly out to shame them, and a whole industrial complex that tells them to get onboard the hype train while spreading the contradictory message “there’s no point anyway, the machine will replace you”.

Meanwhile, capable senior software developers who do put serious thought and work into figuring out whatever the fuck is going on basically just throw their hands in the air and are like “fuck opensource communities, fuck mastodon, if I have to work in secret then so be it”. This happened to a few writer friends of mine in 2024 as well.

What it leaves it just a big hostile void for anybody who lacks the experience to properly benefit from what llms have to offer, and no discourse on how to pass the knowledge and values and enthusiasm (or hope?) we have worked out “by hand” over the years.

Opensource communities were certainly toxic and hostile when I was a teenager, but I had many people who took me under their wings and helped me grow. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t been shown sicp when I was 16, Unix and VMS and just hacking stuff in my late teens, electronics in my 20ies. And that was in the 90ies, when people had an overall belief that computers/internet was going to make the world a better place…

Imagine being that teenager now, having put together a little robot or whatever with ChatGPT, and looking for a community. I certainly wouldn’t associate with people who would say I’m a brain rotten slop addict.

What the fuck are we doing? It’s a formidable challenge, in a time of unprecedented insecurities all around, but it is up to us torelentlessly try to figure out what each new generation of models implies for the future of software engineering and how to pass it on.

they open-sourced the entire compiler, but you're only gonna need the EDG https://github.com/edgcpp/compiler

@foone (Sorry if you have no idea, but I think you are the person I follow most likely to have an insight on this)

Do you happen to know what the best way to search the wayback machine is? Or if there is a way to mass download a bunch of entries of a host so I can search them locally? I'm trying to search info on a long dead forum, and the client-side search is limited to 10000 entries (as in, the filter is applied after it's limited to 10000 entries, rather than the reverse, making it pretty useless)
