I need a basic but not stupid book on how LLMs and AIs actually work

This attempted hijacking is absolutely bizarre

The stories about what happened don’t make a lot of sense - details are missing and some assertions in the media about what happened are outright impossible. But wow what the hell

We could probably do both with just a little judicious re-balancing

No matter what embarrassing thing I did while young there was no danger I’d be surreptitiously filmed and become a globally famous meme

Made the call, no answer, machine hung up on me

Emailed some people there to see if they could at least tell me who to get in touch with

why am I fighting this phone call so hard? I've been perseverating about it for several days

I'm using meds to be able to do it today and I'm still having trouble

it's not a very stressful call even. nothing bad

it's just there, something I need to take care of

Interestingly, if any of the people currently cancelling #Macklemore actually cared about anti-Semitism, they’d all have canceled him in 2014, after the costume incident, and we wouldn’t be talking about him getting fired from a tour he would never have been hired for in the first place

Thing is, Macklemore actually is anti-Semitic.

Not because of what he said about Palestine, obviously.

Because of the time he dressed up on stage as a hook-nosed Jewish caricature.

So let’s please cancel #Macklemore for the correct reasons, not the wrong ones

I hate hate hate hate dealing with people on the phone

Used to do it all the time because it was what there was and it seemed fine, but now that email and text exist I've gotten so I almost can't do it at all anymore

so stressful and I can't even really say why

Humanoid robots falling down and twitching randomly on a soccer pitch proves to me that they’re fully ready to replace human players in the beautiful game

Made garlic noodles tonight, and I’m about 80% garlic by weight now

I can’t go anywhere tomorrow

Unless it’s somewhere very garlicky

Yeah here’s the anti-AI symbol

⏼

“You’ve got to learn how to use AI or you’ll be left behind”

What’s to learn?

It uses natural language inputs. It’s designed to be easy to use without much actual learning. You already know how. That’s part of the point of it

I don’t much like most uses for generative AI, but this “you’ll be left behind” business is just weird

now what do we do

I’m not even talking about open borders. Or anything radical. This is all pitched to small-l liberal understanding. We just need to be reasonable about it.

This is a miracle formula. It works. It brings prosperity by increasing consumer spending, easing labor shortages, raising tax income for governments, and growing aggregate demand. Social and economic diversity improve systemic resiliency and make everything more interesting. An aging population still gets their social security paid for. It can even ease xenophobia, as white people find they have friends, neighbors, coworkers, different from themselves.

Naturally we’re doing the exact opposite

All the arguments about why prohibition is bad also apply to illegal immigration.

You want social stability and law and order? You want prosperity and jobs? You want law-abiding immigrants who support your country’s framework of rights and duties, and learn the language of your country? Okay. Then you want more immigrants, arriving legally, into a supportive situation, able to find decent work and education, protected from discrimination by racists, and free from persecution by a gestapo agency
