I gotta remember that while the boosters say "all software will be LLM developed, you can't avoid it" that NetBSD crushed its funding goal, LibreOffice got record downloads, more people are contributing to Redox, and so on.
It's far from impossible, even if it may feel that way (freakin' Linux kernel grumble grumble)
@slightlyoff I think there should be laws that require electronics manufacturers to provide supported ways to flash custom firmware on devices they sell. Maybe even requirement to escrow source code for the official firmware somewhere for the inevitable date when they stop supporting it.

if meaning is an illusion, and our souls are in essence random splotches of matter arranged in a peculiar but random fashion, then what do you do?

Hi fediverse,I could use some advice, is there a way to "self destruct" a GoToSocial instance I selfhost ? similar to how Littlefedi does it. I have no issue with taking the GTS instance offline but I've heard it is bad fediverse etiquette to let a deleted instance, posts linger without a server to connect to.
You know, sometimes normal form is not the best form for building equality proofs. It's particularly painful when you are trying to do proofs on a "newtype wrapper".
I guess I should be used to not understanding a unification error message in idris for a long time after encountering it.
The government should issue a list of genericised trademarks each year. And we, the people who change the language, should compete to genericise more trademarks each year. Let's finish off Biro and Photoshop for a news story early in 2027.
@haskal@types.pl one of the greatest things ive ever experienced while working in a nightclub was this woman who, upon being complimented on her dress, said "thanks it has pockets" then pulled out a fucking Nintendo switch
I mean, we all KNOW the answer.
When you're wealthy and/or you're the representative of a corporation with very deep pockets and much power...
And the government and its military in particular, have a vested interest in cooperating with you...
Your crimes are not crimes.
They're just accepted hiccups in standard operating procedure.
A forgivable and understandable institutional indiscretion.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate the #Purescript team members that turned around a fix for my #NetBSD issue faster than I expected. https://github.com/purescript/spago/issues/1418
"Today’s double-whammy Avatar announcements came during the show’s panel at New York Comic Con. Before that, Konietzko, DiMartino, co-executive producer Sehaj Sethi, and series voice actors Seheli Khan (Pavi), Aishu Devan (Nisha), Major Curda (Jae), and Janet Varney (Korra) took to the stage. They shared Seven Havens concept art, how Moebius and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind inspired the show, and anecdotes about how the series came to be three years ago. Afterward, Konietzko dropped the bombshell that Avatar: Seven Havens would continue with Books 3 and 4. Before today’s panel, we knew it had two seasons and 26 episodes. While the first 13 episodes are currently releasing in batches every Friday on Paramount+, information on when to expect the other books is still under wraps. All that said, it’s a huge relief for fans, since animated shows, especially new series on any streamer, often don’t get renewed after two seasons."

"As expected, Amazon MGM isn’t giving up on its Stargate revival. In November 2025, the studio greenlit a new Stargate series from Martin Gero, a veteran of previous Stargate shows. But in June, fans learned that Gero’s show had been scrapped, reportedly because Amazon execs worried it wouldn’t have the kind of broad appeal that would lure newcomers beyond the franchise’s well-established fan base.
And today, there’s some fresh Stargate news to invigorate that fan base and fans of Marvel TV shows too. Variety writes that Jac Schaeffer, who created the acclaimed Disney+ series WandaVision and its spin-off Agatha All Along, is coming aboard the sci-fi project.
The trade reports that Stargate ties into Schaeffer’s overall deal at Amazon MGM and that a writers’ room will be starting up soon. Schaeffer will executive produce along with Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tory Tunell."

"The new analysis, published Friday in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, documented an almost comical “dose-response” relationship, in fact, between the number of dubious prescriptions written by a doctor for certain drugs and the number of free meals they had received.
“Doctors often think that this is trivial and doesn’t influence them, that they ‘can’t be bought for the price of a sandwich,’ but the data shows this is an effective marketing strategy,” the review’s lead author, pharmacy professor Barbara Mintzes, said in a statement."

@jef good rules of thumb when complimenting anyone, but especially femme-folx, are to:
1. compliment choices, not inherent qualities.
2. don't compliment sexualized things.
3. only compliment when they have an easy out.
4. compliments are gifts, not transactions.
5. compliment, then fuck off. They'll stop you if they want to continue the interaction.
