Catch us at the Seattle Anarchist Book Fair this weekend!

We just expanded Become the Thousand Servers with a practical section for people trying to figure out where the hell to actually put a site once they’ve decided not to trust one giant platform with everything.

The course now includes a hosting provider comparison chart covering 1984 Hosting, FlokiNET, May First Movement Technology, Koumbit, and La Contre-Voie, with pricing in USD and breakdowns for:

- control
- privacy and data minimization
- backups and recovery
- DDoS/resilience
- movement accountability
- NoBlogs / WordPress compatibility

It also now includes a publishing software comparison for Colophon, WriteFreely, WordPress, Ghost, and Grav, including:

- what each one is actually good for
- migration realities
- whether it is open source
- its license
- self-hosting vs managed hosting
- current pricing

So instead of “you should self-host” followed by 400 pages of Linux scripture and abandonment, the guide actually helps you compare the options and make a decision based on your project’s needs.

Includes a supplemental path for those who have a NoBlogs or WordPress xml file and just want to make a new blog.

ITS HERE:

BECOME THE THOUSAND SERVERS

Autistici/Inventati’s shutdown left a pretty obvious question behind: what happens when infrastructure movements depend on disappears?

We spent the last couple weeks turning that question into a practical field course on autonomous movement infrastructure.

This is not a guide telling every collective to buy a VPS and become its own ISP. It’s about understanding the systems we already depend on well enough to map them, maintain them, back them up, move them, preserve what matters, and pass that knowledge on.

The course has 13 guide sections and 12 practical lessons. You’ll map the dependencies behind a real project, investigate DNS, SSH into a disposable Linux machine, put something online, inspect what you exposed, make and restore a real backup, destroy and rebuild a service, migrate it, stop being the only administrator, preserve published work, troubleshoot a local network, experiment with another networking model, and teach somebody else what you learned.

No account required. Progress stays in your browser, with export/import and optional private recovery.

The point is not to memorize commands.

The unit of resilience isn’t the machine. It’s the person who can reproduce the machine.

Each one, teach one.

Become the thousand servers.

Sabot Media is heading to the Seattle Anarchist Book Fair this weekend, September 26–27, at The Vera Project.

We’ll be tabling Saturday and Sunday with copies of our work, including our companion pieces Grays Harbor SOS and A White Trash Manifesto by Sunday Flint.

Grays Harbor SOS

And at 11:30 AM Saturday, we’ll be presenting our workshop on building rural and urban solidarity: a conversation about organizing across the rural/urban divide, what gets lost when rural communities are treated as politically disposable, and how we can build relationships and solidarity that actually cross geography, class, and culture.

Come find the Sabot table, grab some reading material, talk to us about what you’re working on, and then join us Saturday morning for the workshop.

From
@lacontrevoie

Former users of NoBlogs are invited to contact them about getting set up with free web and mail hosting
lacontrevoie.fr/en/contact/

It will be determined on a case by case basis.

If you have a NoBlogs site, preserve a copy of it now while the public pages are still reachable.

Nobody can currently rely on WordPress admin access, so one practical option is HTTrack, a free tool that can download a static copy of a public website to your computer.

https://www.httrack.com/

Give it your NoBlogs homepage URL, let it crawl the site, then check the downloaded copy and make sure your posts, pages, images and files are actually there.

Then make another copy of that backup somewhere else.

Important: HTTrack does NOT preserve the WordPress database, user accounts, plugins or admin backend. It preserves the public-facing site. If A/I provides an official export or recovery method later, save that too.

After preservation, the next steps are: (more detailed instructions coming soon)

- get your own domain if you do not already have one
- choose a new host (recommendations incoming)
- set up a fresh WordPress site or other publishing platform
- import any official NoBlogs export if one becomes available
- otherwise use the static HTTrack copy as the source for rebuilding old posts and pages
- keep independent backups going forward, separate from your host

The priority right now is simple:

Preserve first.
Migrate second.

If your collective has years of writing, statements, history, documents or organizing material on NoBlogs, do not assume it will remain reachable indefinitely just because you can still see it today.

A/I may be ending. The story is nowhere near over.

For twenty-five years, #AutisticiInventati showed what it could mean for movements to build and control their own communications infrastructure. Its loss should not send everyone searching for the next single service to replace it.

It should send us looking in a hundred directions.

In Boise, the Boise Autonomous Solidarity Hub is experimenting with one of them. @BASH has put a small independent publication on NomadNet, a system running over Reticulum rather than relying solely on the conventional web. It has articles, archives, submissions and contact functions, reachable through a cryptographic network destination instead of an ordinary domain.

That is not the answer. That's what makes it interesting.

Other projects are trying other things: cooperative infrastructure, self-managed servers, RSS, mirrors, print, radio, downloadable archives, federated publishing and networks that barely resemble the commercial web at all.

We don't need to find another A/I. We need to understand how to build a thousand different pieces of what made A/I possible.

Sabot is beginning a living guide to autonomous media and infrastructure, aimed especially at small and rural projects: how to publish, archive, distribute, host, mirror and keep going when a platform, host, domain, provider or collective disappears.

Coming Soon:

BECOME THE THOUSAND SERVERS

A living guide to autonomous publishing, infrastructure and survival

Follow the people experimenting. Follow small radical media. Preserve what matters.

Then build something.

Words translated from and by The Black Wave Collective in Italy.

“Follow those with whom you can dream”
Casino Royale

A comrade is crying.
Some are phoning, some are writing, some aren’t replying, some are translating.

She’s crying, and no one can console her.
Some are saving PDF pages of the ‘Inventati’ lists that are still recoverable; others are swearing because they can no longer find the Indymedia archive and don’t want to bother anyone with an email at such a difficult time.

She is crying, and she doesn’t want to be comforted.
Someone tries to tell her that we’ll save everything – every piece of data, every trace.

And she explodes.

“Do you realise that my daughter, your children, other people’s children, and those yet to come, won’t experience what we’ve lived through?
They won’t discover the Internet as we did; they won’t learn to encrypt or write in HTML?!

OUR FUCKING CHILDREN AND THEIRS WON’T HAVE AUTISTICI OR INVENTATI.

They won’t be as free as we were.
And they’ll be even more alone, without our tools!”

What sort of world would it be without A/I?
We never thought we’d have to find out.

Thanks to those who guarded servers as if they were hearths,
to those who wrote code as one writes a love letter,
to those who kept free spaces alive whilst everything else was crumbling around them.

Thanks to those who believed that another network was possible,
that another way of being together could exist,
that freedom was not an icon but a daily practice.

Thanks to those who resisted,
to those who resist,
to those who will resist.

Con tutto l'amore che c'è

#AutisticiInventati

Nineteen days before the U.S. sanctions deadline, Autistici/Inventati is shutting down.

For twenty-five years, A/I built infrastructure for people who understood that privacy, autonomy and resistance require more than good intentions. Now a government order has made keeping that infrastructure alive untenable.

There is grief in this. There should also be fury.

Because fascism does not arrive only as boots in the street. Sometimes it arrives as a designation, a compliance deadline, a terrified service provider, a bank account that suddenly stops working. Bureaucracy has always been one of authoritarianism’s favorite costumes. The paperwork looks terribly respectable while the walls close in.

And this cannot remain a problem for “the nerds.” People organizing in every sphere need to understand what autonomous infrastructure means, why it matters, and what happens when we leave it to a tiny number of exhausted technical collectives to keep the lights on for everyone else.

We need to become the thousand servers. Now.

If one autonomous project can be isolated, there should be ten more behind it. A hundred. A thousand. This should be the moment radical hosting, federated services, community servers, privacy infrastructure and collectively controlled networks begin flourishing, not retreating. Build them in basements, social centers, infoshops, collectives, cooperatives and wherever else people can keep a machine humming and a cable plugged into the wall.

The lesson cannot be that autonomous infrastructure was too dangerous to maintain.

The lesson has to be that we did not have nearly enough of it.

We ❤️ A/I. We are heartbroken to see it end this way. And we refuse to treat its shutdown as the end of the idea it spent twenty-five years proving was possible.

Use the logo and banner provided by @subvertising to keep their memory alive. Let's not forget this by next week!

Goodbye, A/I. Not farewell.

We’re done posting to Meta.

Sabot’s Facebook and Instagram accounts may remain online for now. A collective decision about whether to delete them entirely has not been made.

But I, personally, have made my own decision: I’m no longer going to spend my time feeding our reporting, organizing work, photographs, graphics, or attention into Meta’s platforms. If other members want to post here they have access and are able to do so. This was not an easy decision and we may return. But for now I think it is important and I hope you follow us off these platforms.

If you’ve followed us here, thank you. Seriously. But this is where our active presence on these platforms ends.

Sabot isn’t going anywhere. We’re publishing more than ever. We just don’t need to keep pouring our work into corporate platforms designed to trap communities inside somebody else’s infrastructure, harvest their attention, and decide which parts of the world they’re permitted to see.

Independent media should have independent infrastructure. Communities should be able to find each other without asking Mark Zuckerberg’s algorithms for permission.

So come find us elsewhere.

Follow Sabot on the federated and independent social web. Follow our Mastodon presence, subscribe directly to sabot.media, use RSS, bookmark the site, share our work directly, or print and distro it.

The internet is much bigger than Facebook and Instagram. It always was.

I’ll see you outside the walls.

URGENT: Autistici/Inventati says Banca Etica is terminating its banking relationship and blocking access to donated funds, leaving A/I unable to pay suppliers or maintain services. A/I says it will pursue legal action.

Read. Share. Preserve. Organize.

Read A/I’s Sept. 5 statement

Five FOIA requests have been filed.

Three with the State Department. One with Treasury/OFAC. One with the FBI.

We’re looking for the missing bureaucratic handoff: who first put Autistici/Inventati into the U.S. sanctions pipeline, when, and on whose referral?

The investigation is now also a public records docket. As agencies acknowledge, process, deny or release records, we’ll publish the paper trail and update the investigation.

NEW REPORT LIVE

We’ve spent the last week digging, cross-checking, archiving posts and reconstructing the sequence that led to the August 26 designation of Autistici/Inventati

The resulting investigation follows a campaign against “Antifa” as it moved through outside advocates, political influencers, the White House, Congress and U.S. counterterrorism policy before an Italian privacy collective was sanctioned.

This is not a theory-of-everything graphic or a pile of screenshots. It is an attempt to document who said what, when they said it, where those arguments moved next, and what the government ultimately did.
