Do you know anyone in Nebraska who worked for Union Pacific in the '70s–90s or is a ham radio or vintage computing enthusiast? I'm following leads on Teletype equipment used there.
Boosts appreciated.

Dumpster diving is the most honourable way to acquire computer hardware.

But you'd better have taken a picture of the cat ❤️
I spilled a few ml of tea on my mousepad and it made my mouse uncomfortable to use; too much friction on the pad, and uneven too.
"Mu", I said in frustration. 😿
Something that bugs me about GitHub and its competitors is that there is no clear path for messaging maintainers with positive feedback. Complaints? Yes, those go straight into the bug tracker. But there's nowhere obvious to send "hey this is great, thank you so much" other than filing a bug that says "this project is too helpful and you're all wonderful people".
(I bet this contributes to burnout.)
I had a pony step on my foot once when I was a kid. Didn't hurt or anything. It was a small pony, I was wearing wellington boots and I was standing on soft ground.
@ariadne hi I just remembered a few years ago having a brief conversation with you about how busybox is slightly a PITA for Alpine Linux maintainers because it's a bit buggy and how there was some interest in maybe replacing it. I'm just curious now: did anyone have a serious go at replacing busybox in Alpine?
What France should have done in the first world war was get a crazy man, make him king, rename him to "Jenkins", then have him lead from the front.
La charge à la baïonnette du le roi Jenkins.

Also the "free market" did not sort out things like food safety and that's why we have the FSA and agencies like it.
(Safety regulations are first written in blood and then inked over.)
@catsalad thank you for retooting all the cat pictures <3
@munin I have a blacksmithing question. When you work steel or iron on a forge, you do so at temperatures about 1100°C ish. When you're shaping it, it picks up stresses and it work hardens.
When you want to stress relieve steel to get rid of the stresses and work hardening, you typically do it at about 600°C ish.
Question is: since the forge temperatures are even higher than the stress relief temperatures, how come the warmth doesn't immediately take the stress out of the metal as soon as you hammer it into it? Is it just because you don't keep the metal hot in the forge for long enough?
Larry Ellison should have had his company buy Borland just so Oracle would own Delphi.
People who put illustrative simple examples in the reference documentation are the best people.
I'm listening to The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails for the first time right now. Trent Reznor is a better singer than I thought he was.
Something I am just realising: web serialised fiction is a little dangerous. When I pick up a novel and start reading I get extremely engrossed and often don't function much for a while.
But if I go reading stories on the internet it is very easy to fail to notice in advance that I am about to read a million words. If it were a physical paperback book then I would at least notice in advance that it is physically gargantuan.
(i refer to books like that as "groundbreaking, because if you drop it on the floor it will damage the floor".)
@cadey hey so, random question, the adorable new Anubis logo: she is also a jackal like the previous one was, right?
It's funny when you read an author who is good enough at writing that they could keep you reading the phone book if they wished. When the plot is good but also it doesn't strictly need to be because this author is just good enough at assembling compelling prose and dialogue that they could be reviewing obsolete lawnmowers or something and you still wouldn't be able to put it down
@codl have you ever played Within A Deep Forest? It's 2D side scrolling adventure where you play as a sentient bouncy ball. By Nifflas. Very cute puzzle game. It has a cheesy moon section.
It needs Windows or wine (worked perfectly under wine for me.)
@lofty btw have random animal photo
Sheep :3
