@infobeautiful @ourworldindata I still remember when China participated in one of the int’l climate meetings and refused to reduce their emissions because that would mean keeping a billion people at a level of poverty where they didn’t have electric lights, but did commit to reducing their “carbon intensity”, their emissions per energy. At the time I thought that was not great but reasonable. Turns out “not great but reasonable” is doing way better than the rest of us
