Brady, of Numberphile etc. fame interviewed John Tromp, who for years did math related to Go, e.g. participated in computing the number of legal states on a Go-board.

If you want to look into the scan, the sentence I looked for was at the first text page, with the "2" being at the 6th line from the bottom.

Wikipedia page of the book:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treviso_Arithmetic

The scan was at the web archive:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120206013105/http://www.republicaveneta.com/doc/abaco.pdf

I could read the translation at Google books:
https://books.google.de/books?id=xu_SVhW9DK0C

Numbers, where do they start?
In a book from 1478, "Treviso Arithmetic", they start with 2.

"Number is a multitude brought together or assembled from several units, and always from two at least, as in the case of 2, which is the first and the smallest number." translates Swetz, Frank, J. 1987, in Capitalism and Arithmetic.

Reading the scanned original is hard, help appreciated with the original. My attempt to read is in the alt-text.

TIL: There is a Lisp that runs on Python, somehow. It's called Hy.

(Hy has access to the Python libraries. Interesting.)

TIL that Vi Hart deleted their YT account.

They intend however to stay on Vimeo.
If you don't know Vi Hart, you may start with their Video about 12-tone music (30 minutes of good joy).

(Most of their videos are related to math, more or less.)

Wer organisiert das, und gibt es eine Webseite??
Ich kann grade seriöse Aufrufe nicht von Ablenkung unterscheiden.

Male orchid bees of the tribe Euglossini collect fragrances, to offer them during courtship.
I find this absolutely adorable :)

Naming cardiovascular and auto-immune diseases "lifestyle diseases" when often they might better be understood and treated as diseases of stress, trauma, and living in a poisoned environment, is a very peculiar framing. Making it sound as if we have choices and individual control about exactly those factors that we in fact have the least control over.

If you find yourself in the town of Brandenburg in the State Brandenburg in Germany, pay attention to the church St. Katharinen and its organs.
There are daily free concerts, and more. The organist Andreas Patzwald wants to show the variety of what's possible with these instruments.
Some of his concerts are at YT, like here, playing music from the movie Koyaanisqatsi.

(All Large Language Models are wrong, some are useful. I asked phi3 "How do you do?" in Greek. It produced 18 pages of gibberish, partly in incomprehensible Greek (not just for me, but also for deepl.com), partly in English. It was a bit horrifying :-) )

Dear speakers of English: Is there a difference in meaning/use between the two sentences?

Dear linguists: Are there languages with a distinct grammatical number for zero things?

I was dumbstruck by the beauty of the two Kathleen Ryan sculptures currently on view on the first floor of the stairwell of Hamburger Kunsthalle. The photographs don't do them justice at all. Each is a universe of sparkling decay ready to get lost in.

The entire exhibition is still on until 11 August, go see if you are so inclined and should find yourself near it.

Uiua - A stack-based array programming language.

Honestly, this looks like APL on mushrooms. I'm impressed.
