A teaspoon of tan powder, warm water, a fork, thirty seconds of whisking — and it goes silky, the way bark must feel to the tree in a long rain.

Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra). The inner bark's mucilage, long chains of sugars like galactose and rhamnose, swells and coats a raw throat or a sour stomach. The FDA allows it in lozenges. Beyond that, the human evidence is thin and mostly traditional.

Take it two hours apart from any medicine, since it can slow absorption. Skip it in pregnancy. Buy cultivated bark.

It has no Gaelic name of its own. Leamhan is the Highland elm, its cousin across the water.

What do you reach for when your throat goes raw?

Chamomile - The covered milk steep. Put 2 tablespoons of dried whole chamomile flowers — flowers, not dust — into a cup of milk, dairy or oat, and warm it until it steams. Take it off the heat, cover the pot, let it sit ten minutes, and strain. Drink it slowly, late, in a chair. Sip. Sit. Relaxation defined in a cup. "Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final." — Rainer Maria Rilke, Book of Hours, trans. Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy (1996)

Here is the day, whole: a hallway, a gate, a scrapyard fire, a tribunal room, a basketball court, a sumac reddening along the tracks. Terror and beauty in the same hour. Rilke doesn't ask you to pick one; he asks you to keep walking with both in your arms, the way the monarch crosses a continent without once being told it's safe, and to trust that the feeling you're drowning in is passing over a deeper ground that stays.

What will you keep going toward?

For Me: Tomorrow, the equinox, and one ordinary morning where I set the phone down before it cuts my hand. Because it cuts my hand every time I read this shit and then have to digest it, and give it to you all in a way that doesn’t hurt. That's the plan. It's the bravest thing I've got, and it's still a hell of a lot more backbone than the cock-cowards in this issue ever managed.

"I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act." — Janet Mock, writer and director, Redefining Realness (2014)

Read the stories again. A teacher doing math in a hallway. A reporter holding out her hand at a gate and getting it back empty. A trans woman in Edmonton deciding a gas station is too far. None of them is abstract. Each is a body in a specific place, deciding how much of itself it can afford to show. Mock's sentence is about order: first to ourselves. Before the world hears it, you say the thing plainly inside your own chest, where nobody can confiscate it.

Whose story are you still carrying?

For me: Mine, for starters — the girl nobody stepped in for, who grew up into a woman past fifty with a keyboard, a mailing list, and a very long fucking memory. I tell it every morning because they're betting I'll get tired, and I've outlived every cockwazzle who ever placed that bet.

Sloppy Joes for Three → Brown one pound of ground beef with a diced onion in a big skillet, about six minutes, until the edges crisp and the fat runs. Stir in three tablespoons of tomato paste, a tablespoon of yellow mustard, a tablespoon of brown sugar, a good splash of Worcestershire, and half a cup of water; simmer four minutes until it goes glossy and thick enough to mound. Pile onto toasted buns. Seven ingredients, three people fed, about ten dollars, ten minutes, no beans, plenty of napkins — because a meal this messy is its own kind of permission.

Hawthorn Berry Oxymel → Rinse a cup of ripe haws — sgeachagan, the fruit of the sgitheach, the hawthorn — and bruise them lightly in a clean pint jar. Pour over equal parts raw honey and apple cider vinegar to cover by an inch, cap with a plastic lid or parchment under metal (vinegar eats metal), and shake daily for two weeks before straining out every seed, since the seeds hold compounds you don't want. A spoonful stirred into warm water, the sweet-sour tang settling at the back of the tongue, is an old way of taking a berry herbalists have long turned to for the heart. Hawthorn can interact with heart medications — digoxin, beta-blockers, nitrates, blood-pressure drugs — so talk to your doctor before making it a habit, and skip it in pregnancy.
