Hey, remember when the right were always saying it was the left that censored people, and how they were free speech warriors and not snowflakes? Good times, man, good times.

The latest article in the Dunbar Design Repository is a conversation between researchers @ferdinandulrich @typeoff and myself. I reached out to both of them after hearing Ferdinand’s talk at the @fontstand Conference in Berlin, and specifically a question Dan asked regarding archiving current digital type design work. I was investigating similar issues so I wanted to ask them what a type design like myself should keep in mind for future researchers.

Hmmm. Looks like #AVIF images aren't support in OGP metadata when shared on Mastodon.

What was that word for nostalgia for times you didn’t personally experience?

Because yesterday I visited the Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry & Technology, and I totally felt that.

Google allowed a fake malware app disguising itself as Google Chrome onto the Google Play Store and even allowed the dev to use their ad platform to push it above its own official listing:

Tell me again why we should trust this company with "protecting us from malicious apps"?

#Lilypond really is an unreasonably good piece of software. Every time I typeset a piece of music with it I feel a warm glow of happiness at its gorgeous output.

Working on light-mode CSS is kind of like being a chef asked to cook a well-done steak.

You have a right to ask for it, and I'll oblige to the best of my ability, but I don't understand the desire enough to confidently give you the best experience possible.

#BikeNite A4 driver in a convertible yelling "where's your helmet" at me, I just laugh "where's yours?" I don't get much bike snobbery, but in front of my kids, I'll explain the heckler's jealous insecurity. His kids are already embarrassed and wish their dad had a cargo bike. It's never a mom.

Something I occasionally think about, and then proceed to be horrified to my core, is this:

A Raspberry Pi 4 *vastly* outperforms an Amiga 4000. Or a Symbolics XL1200. Or an SGI Octane. A typical microSD card is *much* faster than a Seagate Cheetah Ultra320 SCSI HDD you might have found in a high-end Unix workstation back in the day.

But the Pi 4 is barely able to run modern-day office software or browse the mainstream web. The microSD card is mostly considered a slow piece of junk (which it very likely is, though for other reasons than its performance).

What the fuck are we even doing here?

I liked single-use software more when it was simply called scripting.

I need a LINC t-shirt. I'm thinking this, or is there something better?

Last chance! Consultation closes Monday 19 October. Plans for Cycleway 9 West between Brentford and Hounslow Town Centre are well worth supporting. Make sure your voice is heard!

Does this bus go to #multics?

Unix has one kind of cat, LINC has another.

The new policies for the Linux kernel make it more or less impossible to support a slop-free fork of Linux, so if you're worried about the reliability of your system level software, or have ethical concerns about LLM usage on your computer, the time to act is, well, now.

If you have time this weekend, I recommend you to try one of the slop-free systems: NetBSD, 9front, Haiku, or OpenBSD. If you're adventurous, you could try new AlpineBSD, or research smaller systems, like RedoxOS or FreeDOS. If you don't feel adventurous, you might want to check out anti-AI Linux distributions, like Elementary or Gentoo.

There's no "one solution that fits all". But there's a solution that I chose for myself, and that's NetBSD: it gives me the most freedom, it supports most of my hardware, and can run a great deal of software I need. It's not easy to run, but it's a great learning opportunity. There's quite a few folks around using BSD and capable of giving hints and advice, so if you feel stuck, toot about #netbsd.
