"AI" has had basically zero benefit for the companies who adopted it and is a net negative for society but politicians keep talking about "unleashing the opportunities" through public investment while infrastructure and services collapse. Your countries are being run by investment bankers and hedge fund managers.
Hey, @EUCommission, fuck you too.

On Wednesday, EU Member States approved a change to the GDPR that would put the profit-making interests of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX over European's fundamental right to data protection. According to the approved text, processing personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under the agreed text, the profits of AI companies would typically trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.”

Because of course.
@pinskia i believe the github profile contribution calendar is a net negative for foss bc it only counts certain things but not others. it doesn't count discussion, debugging, mentoring, answering questions, bug triaging, even though those are just as important as authoring code and filing issues, which are the only ones being counted
even worse, it only counts code authoring if it lands in the root repo, which means a soft fork with platform specific patches, or a hard fork using the github ui to link to the original, will not be counted at all, making it wholly useless
I now have several friends where the agreement is basically "instead of overthinking and spiraling and guessing, you can just _ask,_ anything and everything and at any time, and I'll treat it with respect and sympathy and tenderness"
and it's so much better than anything else.
When you're close with each other, it should be a safe space, with no question being awkward.

Because eMudhra is in the news, I am sharing a screenshot of a footer of an email I once received from them in reply to my query about my PAN card (a government-issued tax identity and card). #eMudhra

If you're about to complain that #Gentoo developers aren't handling some issue you care about fast enough, let me remind you this.
First of all, the vast majority of us (if not all) are volunteers. By "volunteers", I mean that even if we get some compensation for our Gentoo work, it's not enough to make a living. Which implies we need to have another job, which quite often is a full-time software-related job. So what we're talking about is spending long hours working on software for our dayjob, and then working even more on Gentoo. And quite often Gentoo isn't the only #FLOSS project we're working on.
Secondly, we're having to deal with tons of #slop. Now that almost everyone and their grandmother learned to love the slop, they're pouring it all down the funnel on us. We're seeing multiple times more software releases than before, and we have to handle it. It wouldn't be that bad if it was just about release rate; but we're also seeing the other implications of slop: high code churn, verbose useless descriptions, and of course regressions. We're humans and we need to spend our real human effort to deal with all this semi-automated crap.
And thirdly, in case you haven't noticed, this week's been a nightmare for anything #security related. Many of us needed to deal with the fallout at dayjob, and then with the fallout in Gentoo. Even with all the effort we've already been putting into making things secure-by-default and overriding bad upstream decisions (like bundling CA certificates), there's still a lot of problems affecting us, and a lot of work to be done. Especially that we want to future-proof stuff.
So yeah, I'm sorry that your request isn't being handled timely.
Oh fuck off, we really need to fight USian prudism.
No, I don't want things hidden or blurred for me because some automatic system detected boobs.

remember this when people tell you that AI is “good for accessibility”
I was thinking that some programmers and hardware designers should probably see this

Personally I think the Internet is extremely good, and it is television that is bad. The Internet only got bad when people from The Television moved in and started using it.
you know what I find really really upsetting? startup culture. specifically, the engineering culture of "make up a specification for other people to use with a hope that it becomes so ubiquitous that you can hold people by the balls with it, but the expectation that the likelihood of success is so low you should write LLM-grade prose and code for it".
i've dealt with a lot of that type of specification in my career. this is why i'm spending so much time polishing git-pages despite it not even being my primary competency or goal. it has a very real chance of becoming the de-facto standard way to host pages (if you're not going with CloudFlare or whatever), which means it will probably outlive me. i have no intention of making people curse the day they've found out the project exists by doing a bad job

I don't particularly want to get PHP funded, but it is unquestionably true that the normie world doesn't care one bit about prevention, it only acts when a catastrophe happens, and it always costs a lot more than it would have if people understood the value of prophylactics.
