🧵 For to the extent that the analysis and generation of language, texts, numbers, images, and sounds is based on layers of neural networks, all media—including film and computer code—potentially become statistically operationalized, stochastically-driven data-intensive networks. /end
🧵 The seventh passage considers the transformation of all media through their digitization as statistical/stochastical AI. /7
🧵 A sixth passage reveals neocolonial data economies and geopolitics that extract, automate, and industrialize human semiotic resources and—crucially for the future of media and cultural studies— /6
🧵 A fifth passage theorizes the plural practices of testing that make AI publicly available, i.e., marketable, and at the same time habitualize its use. /5
🧵 A fourth passage resulting from this takes into account connectionist formations of practices, media, and data that contribute to the practical generalization of (initially mostly specialized) AI applications in certain constellations—and in others rather not. /4
🧵 A third passage traces the enormous amount of public research funding (20th century) and private investment (21st century) that is used to finance AI (thus making “follow the money” a methodological imperative). /3
🧵 A second passage addresses the enduring neo-cybernetic impulse that leads to the emergence and recurrence of cognitivist and behaviorist connectionism (as with cybernetics itself, this primarily affects the human sciences, including cognitive science, psychology, statistics, economics, anthropology, Bildwissenschaft, and linguistics). /2
🧵 A first passage problematizes the naturalization of biological computation as sociotechnical digitization, which has turned neurons into artificial neurons (life or thought itself is always universal, as shown by the continuing orientation toward the human brain—which brain research itself does not follow lightly—on the supposed path to general artificial intelligence). /1
🧵 Here are some key takeaways on the multiple returns of connectionism, and their role for theory and history of #AI. What phenomena would a future resituated and resituating media theory of artificial intelligence need to address? /0
Even if this is about X and its current features and downfalls, it is really interesting. Think AI bots and community notes, for example.

🔥 Your AI is on Fire! Here's a piece of media theory to cool us down a bit in the midst of a super-controversy: “The Multiple Returns of Connectionism: Theory and History of Artificial Intelligence“ just came out in the fabulous @mediaofcoop Working Paper series. Happy to discuss this! 🔥

The Korean reception of The Future of Reading (읽기의 위기) has been exceptional: reviews in major newspapers, essays by Korean commentators such as Jeong Ji-woo, and a recent feature in the National Assembly Library of Korea’s Review of the Week.
Readers have responded enthusiastically, too: the Korean edition currently holds a rating of 9.9 out of 10 on YES24, with more than 50 reader reviews.

📚 Out now: my review of David W. Bates' astonishing book “An Artificial History of Natural Intelligence: Thinking with Machines from Descartes to the Digital Age“ 👉 https://doi.org/10.1353/tech.2026.a1004378
An account not to be missed if you are interested in #AI and its twisted histories between nature and culture! #bookstodon #history

Nein! Ist das toll!!
Manchmal vermisse ich #Twitter.
A lot of quintessential academic research and teaching infrastructures are unavailable now. This will be fun in tomorrow's classrooms. #PHP
One #PHP security loophole, and my university's Moodle-based part of teaching is going down. And a lot of other PHP-based services, too. That is pretty massive!
