Publication day for "The Critique of Instrumental Reason Circa 1976: Seymour Papert, Joseph Weizenbaum, Artificial Intelligence, and the Frankfurt School." My first scholarly publication on my long-stewing project on Seymour Papert! https://quod.lib.umich.edu/j/jcms/images/18261332.0065.520.pdf

Thanks to @emenel for being a close friend and collaborator through the whole process.

@Thomas

saw this happen once:

Did I accomplish everything on my list this week? No.

But did I prioritize well and make sure the few things that got done were the most important ones? Also no.

But did I at least make a solid effort I can proud of, even if I did not succeed? Again, no.

Executive function: It's not too late to turn this around!

Me: You really think so?

Executive function: Of course!

Me: You know what that means, right?

Executive function: Yeah! Let's get to wo—

Me: WE DON'T HAVE TO START YET!

This is just beautiful: "Why My Father Is Wrong: A Defense Of Guitar Hero"

https://whatever.scalzi.com/2026/08/10/why-my-father-is-wrong-a-defense-of-guitar-hero/

"Skill. Guitar Hero requires skill. Therefore, Guitar Hero is fundamentally and utterly different than using generative AI. Case closed.

However, I will continue my essay, even though I have already proved my point."

On my academic website I have a link to "See my OnlyFans page" which goes to photos of ceiling fans and pedestal fans around my home. I am a tenured professor.

And what I think is true, but what’s really difficult for me personally to accept, is that we broke the world.

We built tools – and when I say “we” here, I’m taking my tiny but nonzero share of accountability for the project – that carved the world up into a billion little cells, like a spreadsheet for people. And it really was a spreadsheet. It allowed for the recuperation and merciless optimization of the slightest bit of revenue-generating potential coiled up in space.

We broke space, and we broke time, and we broke attention, and the lazy Wawa-stoop summertime of that world is just gone, gone with the crickets and the fireflies and never coming back.

Forgive me, I have blogged again: https://scottrichmond.me/on-programming-pedagogy/

In which I argue that rather than less coding, we ought to teach more, in learning situations heretofore untroubled by code.

tomorrow! 1pm eastern!

Friends, does anybody have useful resources that explain how to take notes well? I am going full-on Luddite for my large lecture this fall and forcing students to use paper & pen for a bunch of stuff. But at this late date, we can't expect 3rd and 4th year undergraduates to, uh, know how to take notes on paper. I can work up my own guidelines, but would love to know what has helped others.

NB: Zettelkasten on paper is not an appropriate thing to ask undergrads to do in one of five classes.

The death of the Toronto Island Airport plans mean we can finally move on to . . .

- Fixing the mediocrity at Pearson
- Better Transit
- Better Amenities
- An airport thats not way worse than Canadas third largest
- Focusing on HSR for Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal

I was a 911 dispatcher for a decade.

To really understand how absolutely terrible an idea it is to have AI answer 911 calls, I'll present you with a single real-life call:

Upon answer, the caller calmly began ordering a pizza. Large, pepperoni. Side order of chicken wings. To be delivered promptly.

The only sign the caller gave that things were amiss? She rather ignored the first few questions from the calltaker.

Because she was being physically abused, had already been beaten, and her abuser was *IN THE ROOM* listening to her order pizza.

Tell me how your AI is going to read between those lines.

Oh fuck yes. The Canadian federal government just vetoed the Billy Bishop expansion, citing, among other things, Hanlan's Point. Toronto's queer nude beach survives another decade.

Fuck DoFo. I mean, fuck Carney, too. But occasionally the federal liberals do something right.

Waymo has started lobbying the city of Toronto and the province of Ontario to start operating in our streets soon.

This is why we have started our "Say No to Waymo" campaign

Read our open letter and sign our petition here:

Boost appreciated!

Tell Carney not to expand Billy Bishop Airport. The consultation ends soon. Fill it out!

I do not endorse demanding that the prime minister of #Canada do something or engaging with surveymonkey.ca in anyway, but I will say:

Hanlan's Point, the oldest #NudeBeach in #Toronto which has its origins in local manifestations of #Pride, is threatened by the #BillyBishop expansion project

And the way I see it, there is some potential for a pretty broad coalition here, which should probably include anarchists and nudists, especially if they can come up with interesting and/or useful ways to contribute
