For some context: @hswaw is a volunteer-ran non-profit community of tinkerers. This Supermicro is our best gear, and it supports not just our services, but those of 3 other hackerspaces. And soon, it will support @mykoryza -- a non-profit that aims to host web services (such as Fediverse) for the public.
If that's something you'd like to support, you can :)
This is a long shot, but: does anyone have access to a Supermicro H11DST-B *version 2.x* motherboard?
We (@hswaw) suspect that the only important difference with 1.x is a larger NOR flash for the firmware. If so, a little hot air action would allow an upgrade to Zen 2 CPUs, and get big perf/power-efficiency gains on a budget.
Boosts much appreciated!
Flip-dot display over RS485 over USB over TCP over SSH over PTY over HTTP. With a dash of RTSP.
(I wrote a little web server to control @hswaw's flip-dot more easily, hacking on it from home with the help of video streaming)
Inspired by an industry-wide push to financially support their favorite (and politics-aligned) Linux dotfiles, I have decided to make a symbolic donation to @ar 's nibylandia, my go-to place for NixOS config snippets.
Alas, I don't have a million bucks lying around.
90% of the time I’m looking at my text editor, a Unix terminal, or a web browser (or some cross-platform app) anyway.
How hard can the last 10% be?
I will move to Linux in this decade.
Zrobiłem śmieszny bootstrap na RISC-V - od 132-bajtowego ziarna binarnego po kompilator C. A opowiedziałem o tym na Cebuli:
FOR LIMITED TIME ONLY,
you can git clone my RISC-V full source bootstrap firmware off a Forgejo server that's hosted on, *checks notes*, a Kindle Paperwhite 10:

Komputer na każdym biurku! Hackerspace w każdym mieście!
Dziś odbyło się spotkanie założycielskie Stowarzyszenia Hackerspace Toruń. Uchwaliliśmy statut i wybraliśmy członków zarządu i komisji rewizyjnej.
Enough with the Rust nonsense.
I have 3 weeks to finish writing my C compiler (in RISC-V assembly). Gotta get back to that.
Assisted-By: Caffeine
Assisted-By: Methylphenidate <Medikinet 20mg CR>
So, uhh, I have 4 weeks to finish writing my C compiler
How should I program this board once it arrives? I could use C or C++ like I always did. Or be even more lazy and use micropython. Or, should I finally sit down and learn Rust?
The irony of using 0201 components and a SOIC Flash in the same design is not lost on me.
It's KiCadurday.
It's a smol (34x38mm) test board with an RP2040, RPi RM2, and a 15x8 addressable LED matrix.
Friends! I'm looking for remote work in:
- systems programming of all sorts
- distributed systems
- performance engineering
- next-gen tooling and infra broadly speaking
I'm a software engineer with 20 years of experience. More about my work: https://radex.io/hire-me/
I'm very rarely available for work! You will not regret hiring me ☺️
(Boosts and introductions much appreciated!)
What do Golangers recommend for talking to SQL databases? (Postgres/cockrochdb)
I have a sense that the query builder/ORM approach common in scripting languages is not as popular here - is that so?
I'm adding a "Human-written" label on top of all my blog posts, linking to a brief LLM policy: http://radex.io/about/llm-policy/
This isn't virtue signaling, I just hate it when I start reading something that seems interesting and then realize (or just suspect) that it's slop.
I want to start with a pledge that I have spent more time writing this than you will reading it (and that all em-dashes are — in fact — mine)
I'm dusting off my blog.
I don't touch it often, so first order of business is to get the static page generator working again. This was a lot less painful than last time thanks to Nix. I just pinned the old Ruby and Bundler versions I used last time and it works!
(I wish I picked something written in Go or something I wrote myself)
I understand that this might be a hard sell to some - if your employer forces you to vibe, this sucks, and the trade off is harder to make. I’d still encourage you to find a way.
