Did you know that Inkscape not only has robust vector capabilities like Illustrator, but it also has plugins for all sorts of neat use-cases - like embroidery; the InkStitch plugin turns Inkscape into a computer embroidery studio capable of outputting machine readable files in a number of formats including Brother and Janome.

This. Like, I'm not mad that someone did this, because fuck Adobe. And I appreciate that the learning curve is easier for people to jump to. These are good things.

But few folks talk about how potential users of these tools could have, for example become part of the vibrant Krita community of developers and artists. And now won't. Or at least won't right now.

AI dupes have the side effect of diverting *potential participants in an active community* into *consumers of a black box* without any real plan for support and sustainment longer-term. And thats worth calling out.

Best case scenario, it shakes folks from a belief that eg Photoshop is the be-all and end-all tool and opens their minds to what else is out there.

I'm fully anticipating this evening and maybe a bit of tomorrow (but hopefully not all weekend) is going to suck though 😆

Got my covid and flu booster and had them add in an MMR just for peace of mind. I'm like 90% sure I had the MMR as a child, and then again before I went to college - but given that I take Amtrak fairly often and the reports in the news of exposure at some train stations, I felt like it "couldn't hurt" 🤷

Everyone references *Brave New World* but never *Island* and that explains a lot

Ok I need an expectations check.

You're a developer. You are calling an API via a library with paging and it's not working. Not that it's failing, it's just not returning what you're expecting... And it's taking a while.

The first thing you'd probably do is verify that it's constructing a request that looks correct. Right? Like the initial call is right, and the paging iteration produces urls that looks correct.

You wouldn't immediately try to schedule a meeting with the API developer to discuss performance issues. Right?!

I feel like people aren't so good at debugging anymore....

Is there a #reticulum firmware like RNode that has a built in propagation node? And is not vibe-coded?

Ideally, I'd like some subset of nomadnet functionality (propagation node, router, single/ small number of static page) that doesn't need to be connected to something running python or a Wi-Fi network.

Maybe that's too much to ask of an esp32? Though some existing projects suggest it should be possible.

I feel like one of the barriers to mesh coverage is that the options for "standalone solar thing you stick someplace high" are limited.

Hrmm... AtomVM would be a neat choice here if not for the existing libraries all being C....

Thinking about a thing that is kind of like a MUD and kind of like a BBS. An architecture by which to build *places*
Of all the places, Fedi seems like the best equipped to point out recommendations for anything that exists in this space

I also realized that Achaea is still active which is amazing.

So 1Password doubling down is... A choice.

There is something.... Super fucking weird about all the money and attention swirling around this. I would at this point be *super sus* about anyone and everyone involved.

This is clearly a play in motion.

Flapjack has lots of nicknames. Flapjack ->> flooper->> flooper dooper ->> doops.

Here he is, exemplifying the doops.

I'm. SO. Fucking. Tired. Of tech choosing again and again to do the wrong thing. And so tired of it not being the radioactive career killer it should be.

In a just and compassionate world, no one would want to touch DHH, because the ideas he espouses are fundementally in opposition to their values and those of their customers. They would be imploring him to change course.

Why isn't this the case?

This is a toot about 1Password.

Feeling fatigued under the existential weight of modern technology? Ask your doctor if VT220 might be right for you.

Well Google was the first to bend the knee, despite no legal pressure to do so. I realize they probably pull directly from GNIS but they could have suspended that update. They choose not to.

🤮

It was Google Y'all

I'm seeing more and more folks embrace the crayon drawing. The "even though it might not look as polished as something I could have prompted, it was made by me, with intent and by my own effort without stolen labor...and that makes it inherently more meaningful" philosophy.

The world needs more crayon drawings right now

Hrm apparently "but closed loop cooling" is doing a bit of lifting to brush aside water use concerns about data centers.

Almost always this is a lie by omission. It might be a closed loop between the chips and the heat exchanger, but to where does the heat exchanger exchange?

Some are air cooled
Some use the ground
Some use non potable water, either evaporative or intake/outflow to a canal or river.

You could theoretically use the heat to do other things like heat buildings in cold climates, or as industrial process heat. This is rare

Most use evaporative chillers.
Evaporative chillers using potable water.

Now across the board use is about .3% of total public supply, which is marginal compared to, say, beef, which is 5% if you also count feed crop irrigation (is slightly under 1% for just the cows)

But data centers tend to be concentrated in areas (like texas, California, etc) which already have water scarcity, so that part matters. And in smaller cities that number can easily translate to double or triple the existing consumption.

Also that figure doesn't include indirect costs of water used for eg electricity generation. And both are expected to increase.

So yeah

This is definitely one of those books that I will come back to, to reread and work though specific things. One of the things that stood out to me as a negative initially was the editing (which did make use of LLM‡) and it being a little disjointed and repetitive in places.... but of course it would be - as a field guide that repetition makes it easier to go back and reread sections later.

‡the LLM use is called out and discussed (the author using it to mine through and help organize their own material accumulated over decades)
