@gnomon Wellllll... There are still a lot of applications, e.g. in pkgsrc, that use their own custom TLS trust anchors, like dozens of Rust packages that statically link copies of the webpki-roots or webpki-root-certs crates. NetBSD is in no better shape than any other platform regarding that.

This is exactly the scenario I anticipated when I wrote NetBSD's certctl(8) to make handling it easy! But it doesn't magically patch all the baked-in cert bundles everywhere.

An HTTPS certificate authority has been compromised. If you want to ensure #NetBSD is not vulnerable, you can run the following commands as root:
# certctl untrust /usr/share/certs/mozilla/all/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.pem
# certctl untrust /usr/share/certs/mozilla/all/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.pem

You can review the untrusted ones with:

# certctl untrusted

Oh look what found its way onto my Eee PC :)
Took my first baby steps into #netbsd today :)

first steps made, help improving NetBSD support on RK3588-powered MNT laptops wanted: https://community.mnt.re/t/status-of-netbsd-on-the-rk3588-pocket-reform/4699

I feel like the folks I see in my timeline, asking about wayland support; and wondering if they can bring their steam games... need to adjust their expectations as they plunge into alternate operating system land.

For those with install and usage issues on #netbsd, try https://www.unitedbsd.com/

I got helpful answers within 10-15 minutes there.

imagine if the official linux foundation account helped you with your wifi

Running commercial games? It is possible, but you'll probably have better luck with DRM-free indie games. https://washbear.neocities.org/valhalla

No audio output? It is possible your default device or output DAC needs to be changed, see the instructions on https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-audio.html

WireGuard® VPNs? See the EXAMPLES section of https://man.netbsd.org/wg.4

ZFS? Yes, we are using it in production. No, it isn't the same branch as Linux or FreeBSD.

Some #NetBSD questions that keep coming up.

We don't use modules for HW drivers in the default install. All baked into the kernel. If you're curious about desktop hardware, for x86 there are lists https://wiki.netbsd.org/laptops/ https://wiki.netbsd.org/gpus/ (and the pci/usb manual pages)

x86 virtual machines. https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-virt.html#chap-virt-guest

For disk encryption there's different options, such as creating a small root with the installer, then adding encrypted partitions later (see man cgdconfig). Also: cgdroot.

i'm encouraged by the #NetBSD movement. I think Linux overestimates the number of users that were reluctant. People like me. People who were exposed to commercial Unix (SunOS, Irix, OSF/1) where on the whole, things worked, were documented, people were serious about standards, and maybe even internal kernel interfaces were documented and stable. People who were exposed to BSD and preferred its stability (and the fact that bash wasn't the default shell). But over time Linux had support for all the newest hardware, because that's where the crowds were. So we adopted Linux. Reluctantly.

But as soon as there's a reason to jump, or go back. We do. I don't suppose the reluctant adopters of Linux are a huge part of the Linux users, but there's enough. It's coming home.

This morning, I have successfully installed #NetBSD on the newish laptop. After 30 years of running Linux exclusively in this house, today is the beginning of a new era. #RUNBSD

I was feeling bored and kind of down recently, so I decided to distract myself by trying out NetBSD on an old Wii U. I'd seen that support was added this year, but hadn't tried it.

After a couple of days, I managed to get my usual terminal workflow up and running with no issues or build failures at all despite the exotic hardware.

There's something so beautiful about using this weird old hardware to run a 2026 operating system.

Never change, @netbsd. Never change.

#NetBSD

I'm giving away all my Sparc hardware:

2x SparcStation 10s
1x Lunchbox form-factor 32-bit SparcStation, maybe an LX? Basically a single processor SS10 in a lunchbox form factor with a microSparc CPU
1x Ultra 1e that doesn't boot with a graphics card
1x Ultra 5 with no cards or any other accessories

And a bunch of other random related stuff including some HDDs for the Ultra1e, several sBus graphics cards, an sBus ESP wide SCSI card, some random SCSI cabling and adapters, and an mBus HyperSparc CPU.

This is free to anyone who can either:
- collect it from the inner west of Melbourne
- or lives anywhere within ~15km of a line between the Melbourne and Geelong CBDs that is accessible by car (if you're not sure, ask)

I'm not going to split this up, so if you don't want all of this, please give away or recycle the rest.

I'll update this post when it's gone.

(Please boost for reach, I'd really like to give all of this away instead of recycling it)

@netbsd I wish you good luck finding an artist to make your artworks, and I salute your no AI policy for it! 🧡

Here is a little watercolor sketch freely inspired by your logo.

@netbsd YES IT DID ❤️❤️❤️

Enthusiastically happy caps, if that wasn’t clear :)

I worked on the service component, and also handled all of the service, os, and firmware builds. I sat next to the Bluetooth lead, a close friend, who was working on the port.

I remember clearly him showing me the first build that booting to a shell, and running `top`.

Prior to that, it was 100% homegrown, which was huge in its own right. And then this, which was the smallest form factor I’d ever seen a UNIX running on. It was amazing.

And that was an amazing team.

Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?

We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!

Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

Highly motivated to find folks with Whistle InterJets -- late-90s 486 SOHO Internet appliances (IBM bought and sunsetted it, and sold off the whistle.com domain). People with long ISP memories may remember it because it was resold by ISPs in US /Europe / Asia (especially Japan).

I'm building a comprehensive info resource (and tailoring modern NetBSD to run on it). We need to find folks with hardware, software we're missing, ephemera, or memories. The software (on 30yo IDE drives) is especially endangered.

Rough site, in all its 1995-grade (but secretly HTML5) "glory":

https://www.alaska.net/~royce/interjet/

(That tilde account is also endangered -- I've also registered a domain and will be moving to it when ready)

DM me or hit the email on the page.

Please boost, especially if you have overlap in the retrocomputing or vintage ISP space!
