Finally moved my Mastodon presence here on mastodon.social as @danbricklin. Used to be @danb on qoto.org, but that stopped working for me. Missed Mastodon, so am trying again. Glad to see all of you!
MCKINLEY IS OUT NOW!
McKinley is a Mac app for making SF Symbols, combining a vector editor, tools that understand symbol weights, smart preview, an export that skips the tedium of converting strokes to paths, and automatic Xcode asset catalog sync.
Normally $60 (one-off purchase), but there's a 15% launch week discount (to $51) until Sept 14th!
And for those asking, it's named for McKinley Square in San Francisco.
@caseyliss The funniest jokes are the ones with a sliver of truth. 😄
Holy God this is _perfect_.
Reminder: Apple is not your friend, even with a new CEO. Apple will continue to do some good things and some very bad things. Any feelings of love you have toward Apple is not reciprocated: Apple has no feelings. It’s a multi-trillion dollar company that, like every other corporation, would like your money but does not care about you, or your values, at all.

My favorite CarPlay feature is when it's reading a text message to me and I go to tap the "Done" button and it suddenly turns into a "Call” button underneath my finger and I have to wait for all of the animations to finish before I can actually end the call and then I wonder (a) did the person notice that I called them for a few seconds and (b) do I need to explain that now and (c) are they going to call me back now and (d) HOW DID THIS INTERFACE EVER SHIP oh my god

If you don’t mind me bragging a little bit— I think Luka and I are absolutely killing it over at @parakeet lately. I’m so proud of us, and thankful that our clients let us make such nice icons for them!

Excuse me, pardon me. Extremely cute app icon coming through. Direct from Luka @grafera. (Dark mode? Yeah, we made it. Pumpernickel bread.)

First time I've ever localized an app to other languages: https://www.reddit.com/r/unforgetful/comments/1w229hs/testflight_build_27_translations_fixes/
I opened up Apple Maps' search box and its new ads suggested I go to JetBlue Airways, the JetBlue terminal at JFK airport 39 miles away.
I opened up Google Maps' search box, and 100% of the screen space is devoted to my presets (Home/Work/etc.) and my Recent searches.
Apple continues to embarrass itself with its shitty ad plays.
In the meantime, I'll keep using Google Maps, because it's just *better*, and — something I never thought I'd say — it respects me more as the user, with fewer ads. 🤯

It's OK. This feature is awesome, and one I use heavily.
Every social network needs a few mutes here and there. Nobody inherently deserves anyone’s attention.
If someone replies in a way that makes me think, "I'd rather not hear from this person again,” I just mute forever. No aggressive block, no report or feedback, no way for them to know. It's not meant to send a message, get revenge, or influence anyone else — just tailor my feed for me.
Big TestFlight update for Unforgetful: https://www.reddit.com/r/unforgetful/comments/1w0vj1c/testflight_build_25_custom_snooze/
@atpfm @caseyliss Sorry, to be clear: that was fake! There’s no audio transcription comparison on Apple’s website. I meant it just as an inside joke for fans of the show, not to trick you guys. (Also, notice the label in the selected pill)
I also almost made a chart comparing gaming performance on the M5 Ultra to the “Mac Pro (2019) with 12-core CPU”, as another ridiculously-specific comparison.

From scratch.
Making custom models has turned 3D-printing from a family novelty into a full-blown craft and life-improving hobby for me.
I started in TinkerCAD, which can get you VERY far, VERY quickly. Now I make most models in Onshape, since I've built up the skills to be pretty fast with it, too.
I sometimes print stuff I find on Makerworld, but usually the problems I'm trying to solve are too specialized.

My current AI-code policy is that I will always use the best model I can access, as long as it's practically able to do the job.
Right now, as far as I know, that's Fable.
Quality and accuracy matter FAR more to me than volume or speed of output. And I feel that I owe it to my customers — and myself — to use the best tools at my disposal.
Cost may be a factor to others, so no judgment. This is just my policy for myself.
I couldn't figure out this bug, so I asked Fable, and it was SO much more incredible than I expected.
- My bug report was wrong in a way I didn't notice
- There technically was no bug, but a flawed design caused unintended outcomes
- It verified that the design almost certainly caused me to fall into that trap, and proposed a simple, effective fix
Wow.

M5 Ultra and M6, new Mac Mini and Mac Studio, @siracusa‘s new app, and yes, even a new Polishing Cloth.
Did you know that 3D printed covers for Flock cameras are easily printed and make cameras inoperable when you plop them on using a pole?
I share this information for no reason at all.
