@davidgerard We've spent more than 75 years trying to keep code and data separate and vibe coding just drunk-drove a bulldozer through a lifetime of hard-learned lessons about best practices.
A thing that just keeps striking me hard. We are told, oh agents are the future. Agents will be able to perform every task you could imagine. It will change how you engage with the computer. You just give a directive and the AI operates every website and computer program on your behalf.
Meanwhile, EVERY WEBSITE I VISIT makes me jump through hoops to make absolutely certain I am not some sort of AI before I can do something as simple as visit the Merriam-Webster thesaurus page for "gullible"
@miss_rodent @AnarchoNinaWrites important to note, btw: OpenAI's *made up* revenue number is $20b below their previous *made up* revenue number
all of this is fake Annual Recurring Run Rate numbers of unknown basis
none of this shit's been audited. when it *is* audited, we see numbers like the $5b in Anthropic's draft S-1.
now $5b is a lot of money! but also not to service $400b in liabilities.
I especially like this:
"Our goal of maintaining shitty men in power requires that millions of men do not call out the shitty behavior of other men—big or small. So, the bottom line graph is how that happens."

@normalsubgroup I say this repeatedly to people, and they respond with:
"I'm using a paid model, so they don't use it for training"
I am astonished at their level of trust.
Margaret Hamilton, computing pioneer who led software development for the Apollo program, dies at 90
Over two decades at MIT, Hamilton forged new paths in computer science and engineering. Her groundbreaking work included leading the team that programmed the first computers that took humans to the moon.

If you thought that only the swedish chef is crazy, I present exhibit B.
This is the funniest thing I've seen today, possibly ever
As someone who started on university in 86, as the OO craze was gearing up for real, I can't help but notice this recent comment about Java: “It is also a language heavy in the Object Oriented Programming world, and the baggage that brings with it.”
big foss: "to avoid supply chain risk and backdoors, contributors must now verify their identity"
also big foss: "we are pleased to announce that claude is now contributing to the repo!" :neocat_think_woozy:
A decade ago, if I was slinging a few thousand lines of code, it was obvious that I, a living human being with an attention span of some description, had to have worked at it. I could potentially be trusted to continue working at it. Obviously, I cared enough to write this much code.
That's not the case anymore. If I throw code at a problem, you don't know that I care enough to support it in a week, let alone a year or more.
That alone feels like enough of a reason to distrust LLM-generated output in the FOSS world. To say nothing of all of the other reasons.
@mekkaokereke "I didn't vote for this" = "I voted for this thinking magically it wouldn't affect me." :blobcatfacepalm:
When looking for a hotel booking.com is a great resource. The correct way to use it is to look for a place you like, then find their phone number and call them directly. They will always give you a lower rate and you won't be sending money to a faceless corporation.
“But the intellectual muscle that’s exercised in everyday writing is the same one used for the writing that matters. We become better writers by the constant effort that mundane writing demands.”
Some good perspectives here.
i didn’t think it was physically possible, but there’s finally something worse than curl | sh
The #momentum of over-#optimization:
"Two years later, I was sitting in a post-mortem room watching someone pull up a benchmark comparing our new order processing service against the old #COBOL batch job it replaced."

Fun fact - all the customer Microsoft Defender for Endpoint telemetry is in CosmoDB.
The embedded video is a long watch, but it's super-powerful ammo in the discussion of why "AI" is absolutely so bad for nearly everybody and the real reasons that Business has embraced it so and believed the lies.
And you probably already know why (hint: it's not the capabilities of the models), but Stewart and @pluralistic lay it out in plain English. A must-watch, IMO.

I find this compelling, but my economic clue is subprime (pun intended). I would love to read critique on their arguments.

"As Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei Asia found in a recent investigation, just five US tech giants — Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle — are hiding an estimated $1.65 trillion in debt that doesn’t appear on balance sheets. That’s even more than the $1.35 trillion in debt the five companies officially reported in their financial data for the most recent quarter."
