Kid (9) is having an #autistic #shutdown . They went to an event with 400 kids and it was loud and people pushed and then he came home and we needed to do Halloween costume stuff, and they still had homework... aand that was too much.

So I cancelled homework, dimmed the lights, and told them to lie down on the couch with blahaj and a blanket until they felt better.

I *wish* someone had taught me what it was that made *me* feel this way when I was little. #actuallyautistic #parenting

Dear #chickensofmastodon and #gardening communities, how do you keep your chickens from devastating your vegetables?

I've got a raised bed that needs to be fenced in with metal wire, and they still get in, and built a ground-level vegetable patch fenced in by a bamboo fence (which I thought would be enough - laughable in hindsight).

As the garden year is winding down I'm thinking about fall planting some green manure (not possible in the ground-level patch currently) and structural changes, so give me all your tricks!

I need the little dinosaurs to keep their claws and beaks off my veggies next year!

Ich werde im Herbst eine große Menge Hopfen zurückschneiden, und würde den gerne als Mulch/Flächen-Kompost auf Beete verteilen.

Hat jemand eine Idee, wie man das Zeug gut zerkleinern kann? Wir reden über etwa daumendicke Stränge mit vielen Seitentrieben, alles ineinander verwurstelt. So etwa 5 Meter breit, 12 Meter hoch, also schon ein größerer Haufen.

Ich habe Zugriff auf einen Holz-Häcksler, aber für den ist das zu kleinteilig und zu wenig starr. Außer "grob mit der Heckenschere durchgehen" und "dem Kind eine Gartenschere und eine Motivationsrede geben" fällt mir nix Gutes ein...

Gut, so eine Haltung auch dort zu hören, wo das Publikum vielleicht nicht so Internet-affin ist. Junge Menschen zu mündigen Bürgern zu erziehen, das hört man viel zu selten als formuliertes Ziel.

Mein Haushalt ist eine "Bildschirm-positive" Familie, wir versuchen dem Kind (8) sowohl positive Seiten des Internets zu zeigen, als auch auf Manipulationsmöglichkeiten hinzuweisen. Ganz selbstverständlich, wie ich es auch überall sonst tue. Wie soll es das auch sonst lernen?!

Es hat uns schon mal von sich aus gebeten, eine Zeitbegrenzung auf Reddit einzurichten, weil es das nicht selbst in den Griff bekam - und selbst gemerkt hat, dass es ihm nicht gut tut.

@autistics This happens after "bad" stressful days, but also if the day was just full.

For example, I'm currently on holiday at home, quite relaxed in general, but had the relatives over for easter dinner. Of course there was a rush in the morning with last-minute cleaning and preparation, followed by a lot of socializing. I was pretty spent in the evening, and went to sleep easily, but I am wide awake since 4:30 am (it's now past 5).

The usual sleep hygiene things are fine or okay: I love my bed, it's dark, cool and quiet, I have a sleep mask: this is usually a place where I sleep well. Just not through the whole night, on too many nights.

Hey @autistics ! I have a problem, and wonder if any of you might have similar problems, but maybe, hopefully, also a solution to go with it?

After intense days, my body decides that what I need now is not a full night of sleep, but intensely processing my stress at 4am. It takes the form of my mind being wide awake, looking for problems to solve. Could be real to-dos, but if I get those out of my mind, it'll reliably find other things to ruminate about.

Has anybody found a way to avoid that and tell their bodies to go to sleep? It compounds and leads to a constantly deteriorating state after a few nights like that.

I've learnt about body scans, muscle relaxation and breath work in therapy, but those don't help much: my body is decently relaxed, but my mind is wide awake and racing.

I have constructed something! I'm really a bit proud of that door. It was harder than it looks. Also it looks like I might still finish that bloody fence while the trees bloom!
