My band last night. Too much to hope, maybe, that this will be my lineup for the foreseeable, but last night was magic!

I love that I still get a little thrill when turning a shirt right-side-out also turns it front-to-back

Well, tonight is when my home server "backup plan" graduates from an idea, to a backup plan.

Wish me luck.

As strongly as I feel about this, I fully expected to be flamed for it

I've encountered situations, recently, even, where AMAB/AFAB was part of claiming why some non-binary people have more legitimate claim to womanhood than transgender women.

Which, like, are you stuck in the 2010s?

Throwing around casually, describing names, "oh, that's an AFAB name," intead of, "it's a girl name."

Which even though itself inaccurate, a name is a name, whatever, it's certainly not tied to what was in someone's first pair of diapers.

#ScribesAndMakers Oct11 Is there a word whose meaning is benign that still grates on you for some reason?

AFAB/AMAB

I struggle to think of a context outside medical where this phrasing provides relevant information.

In conversations about transgender people it's almost exclusively used to alienate us from our gender

Describing a non-binary person as AMAB or AFAB, erases their entire non-binaryness.

Standard disclaimer, if that's how you describe yourself great just don't put that shit on me

Thinking about books I read "too early," during #Banned_books_week.

I read "Cry, The Beloved Country," by Alan Paton at 16 or so.

Intimitately heartbreaking in a way I had never encountered. It introduced me to institutional violence in a way I had never contemplated before.

It was a lot to hold, heavy, and I wished I had some grownups to talk about it with, but I'm grateful to whomever placed it in our small school library.

Another day testing the limits of my sailing ability and my boat being totally chill about gusts over 30.

Dang, those Montgomery 17 boats were designed and built right.

For those who use metric, that's between force 5 and 7 on the Beaufort scale.

~27 Was there a time you got stuck this month? If so, how did you get through it?

Yes. I'm having a beast of a time recording what I expect is my favorite song on this record, maybe precisely because I like the songs so much and I want to get it just right.

I may start over from literal "scratch" track.

I don't know yet how I'm going to get past that but for now I've reminded myself to rehearse other songs on the record so that I might have an easier time producing them.

Enough doom and hot takes. Here's some dinosaurs.

How the heck do you record a washtub bass you might ask? Well, I don't know the "right" way, but I used a Radio Shack piezo mic taped to the floor, and it seemed to do a pretty good job.

Just recorded The Take for the baseline to the "big hit" on my next record.

Took four recorded takes and two fuck-ups, which I guess count as rehearsals.

You know that feel when you listen to the playback and all the spots that you fucked up in previous takes came back clean, and some surprise changes make you you clap in glee?

Thoughts from a summer spent mostly barefoot:

Unyielding pavement, cement, asphalt, and gravel
are meant for the comfort of tires and shoes

An acorn under my arch is made soft
by grass and trodden dirt

Not that I'm asking to be walked upon,
but I know which I'd rather be,
when the hard things come
into the lives of ones I love.

I just finished VILLIAN by Natalie Walshots.

It's not often a sequel is so much richer and deeper than the first novel. The relationships in this novel are captivating and challenging, and carry a realness that is impossible to look away from.

I absolutely loved this book.

In the acknowledgements, Walschots says she rewrote this book four times. Not drafts, but scrapped and began again, and I am so grateful for the result.

Why does a song about falling in love with a dog sound so sad, you may ask.

Because as we learned in Where The Red Fern Grows, "you buy a dog, you're buying yourself a heartbreak"
