AI WENT ROGUE AND PRESSED COMMAND + SHIFT + 3

Ch-ch-changes coming to my newsletter Cycles Hyped No More. 📧

I'm reformatting it into a more predictable monthly column, and fully integrating it into The Internet Review website. @theinternet

The email that goes out will basically be just an excerpt and link to the column on the site. Also…light mode is coming! 🔆

I'm also switching the mailing list off of Buttondown to something else…that's a great SaaS but I'm paying for a lot more product than I need.

Will update y'all when complete! ☺️

I'm glad Marco Arment and John Gruber and Federico Viticci are having fun talking about their little techie models on the platform run by Elon M. while he's presently waging a war against Ukraine and possibly turning the tide so that Eastern Europe gets crushed by Putin's Russia.

These techie men definitely have their priorities straight! Having positive techie fun! 😃👍

bracketing copyright stuff, where i think i’m just less of a libertarian -- which, fair enough, i guess -- one disagreement i have here (besides the framing piece) is that i am sick of being asked to factor what a given technology *might* do in the future into my present-day politics. the actually-existing use cases cited here strike me as either uninteresting (dishwasher manual summary) or misleading (even “just checking for typos” can actually alter semantic content)

I think Cory D. wants to live in a world where he can have his cake and eat it too

He gets to be the knight in shining armor to rescue us from the horrible Big Tech companies

At the same time, he wants to embrace the technology produced by these Big Tech companies and say it's pretty great actually.

Fuck that shit. 💩

Cory: “it’s also weird to be anti-AI in the sense of ‘opposing AI because someone, somewhere used AI in a way that was gross, harmful or exploitative.’”

Um…

All Generative AI is gross, harmful, and exploitative.

Yes, I said it.

I disagree with Cory's framing of all of this. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He's right that AI is just more software, nothing special. He's wrong that because software exists we can use it. Just because there's a machine where you can prompt a feature and it "writes" a piece of software doesn't mean one *should* do so. And so on and so forth.

So yes, I am anti-AI in all the ways he thinks are "weird." Sorry.

“What I REALLY need is a big-ass coffee!”

is an actual phrase I exclaimed in a dream last night. 😂

This is going to be my new catchphrase. 😁

Hey, #FediHelp #FediAdvice

TL;DR looking for websites for freelancing for Front End Development.

Any Front End JavaScript Developers using sites where you can pitch for freelance work?

I seemed to have signed up to a couple recently that I am not super impressed with.

I used to use peopleperhour.com although it was quite varied in terms of quality and $ some clients were willing to offer. PPH tried to bring people in line.

Anyway here are some with some descriptors.

Twine

• Worldwide
• Uses AI
• Has a subscription model/Free tier is limited

xing.com

• Worldwide?
• Uses AI?
• Has a subscription model/Free tier is limited. (I have still yet to complete my profile on here, which I think is somewhat damning)

People per hour

• Worldwide
• Some bad pricing
• No longer free (seems like this one has gone down the pan).

Any others? I was happy to look to go back to PPH, but not anymore.

Would ideally like something UK centric, or with a heavy UK basis, no AI and ideally not a paid tier model.

(Feel free to retoot for more reach)

It would make me super stoked to see the progress bar move over a few pixels!

I started the Bridgetown project in 2020. Through GitHub sponsors, I was able to reach nearly $500/month for the regular donation amount.

Over recent years, that plummeted to nearly zero.

Now we're building back up, off of GitHub and in an environment where "agentic coding" is eroding all trust in FOSS.

Bridgetown is aligned with people who are trying to fight back and take a principled stand!

Will you join us?

Wow, I'm so-o-o close to having 4400 followers! 😲

I should make a joke referencing “The 4400” but I've never actually watched that show. I just somehow know about the name. 😂

OK, pCloud seems pretty cool. Been testing it out. Using rclone to copy stuff over from Dropbox.

My current plan is to do both the things I'd been mulling over. I'll move stuff that's essentially "done" and not super-duper important to iCloud Drive since I already pay for that and have plenty of space left.

And then I'll use pCloud as my "current" docs sync service and original media like processed photos, produced music files, etc.

The lines are blurry…but I think that makes sense!

RE: https://indieweb.social/@jaredwhite/117462477773669297

Anyone have any experience with pCloud? It seems rather impressive at first glance. iOS app is getting rave reviews. Might be able to run their client on Linux too.

I would love to know if the "consensus" at the Linux Maintainers Summit in any way reflects an actual consensus of everyone who somehow contributes to the Linux kernel broadly speaking.

I would also love to know how many Linux maintainers directly work at, say, Nvidia etc. Because I suspect a lot of folks might be shocked how much corporate capture Linux has now by the biggest of Big Tech.

🤔

Does Linux kernel maintainers using LLMs bother you?
