Exact, the market leading bookkeeping system that big enterprises use, and is forced on clients by accountants all over my neck of the woods, charges at least €100 monthly for a subscription.

Their user interface is bad. So bad that I would have found it unacceptable 20y ago. It takes seven actions to change a number field and then it silently reverts the change if you don't hit a particular key before you hit the save button. Batch edit only for the fields you don't want to edit. That kind of bad 🤮

Their API isn't much better.

Now I am surrounded by enthusiasm in the financial department about the fact that it seems to be possible to vibe code around this atrocity, so at least we don't have to endure it directly.

But I'm thinking that's not nearly the flex people make it out to be.

What if we would build a properly functioning FOSS bookkeeping software? Wouldn't that make all of our lives much easier?

I have no illusions that a nobody like myself can see the full picture, but it is dead obvious that people with more money than a god can count are playing games to acquire more money, putting real lives of innocent people on the line.

The clearest example in the video is at just past 15:30: "how many examples do you know of more intelligent things controlled by less intelligent things?" meant as a rhetorical question: "None".

But there are many examples: any organization of more than 80 people likely controls members that have a higher intelligence than the org itself. Any mob or group-think affected group controls its more intelligent members.

The risk is not machines becoming more intelligent, the risk is humanity becoming less intelligent. This risk has materialized, the harm is already being done, and talk of super intelligence is nothing but a distraction.

Xkcd 1732 was made ten years ago, but we're still _exactly_ on the "current path", which is, without exaggeration, the doomsday scenario.

If we can't get the needle to move only a tiny bit over a decade, we need to be a lot louder apparently.

We don't need artificial super intelligence to kill humanity, because we already have fascists and Artificial Ignorance doing that job.

Not living a life that would make your death celebrated like this is a really low bar to clear. That's what I think about that. Enjoy the jokes :)

A friend said they didn't want to switch to Signal. The argument was that when they installed, almost immediately Signal started asking for donations.

I swallowed my response, because it felt inappropriate at the time, but this is what I thought:

Assuming the answer is "no", would you rather be asked to give someone a sexual favor or be raped in your sleep and have no knowledge of what happened?

I think it's a perfect, albeit graphic, analogy.

What do you think?

If you're in Germany, and not a Nazi, and scared... please know that I will hide you.

I hate captchas. I'm looking at you with deep frustration @signalapp

If cleaning up after flowers is not for you, or you can't get them sustainably, try to put something else in a vase. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Please show me more satisfying vase pictures if you like. It makes me happy 🙂

Sodium grid batteries are technically viable, and being mass produced as we speak. Some small hurdles left:

- they're too big to put in your house, so your grid company needs to wake up to this (don't hold your breath)
- they're still too expensive to compete with overproduction and fossil compensation (this won't take more than a few years to be solved)

Isn't it ironic that Jeff Bezos gives less than 1/1000th of his net worth to Dolly Parton's charity, while Dolly Parton showed in her lived example exactly how and why to avoid becoming a billionaire in the first place?

It's like he had all the clues right in his hand and still managed to miss them.

If you spend more money on superyachts and private jets than on charity, normal people will see you for the asshole that you are. It's not that hard to understand bro.

I've heard that there is a small vilage in the UK where they'd rather be duped by a corrupt fascist billionaire than have some fun.

I'd definitely go there if I wanted to rule some peasants. These are just perfect.

It baffles me how casually our leaders seem to gloss over the pesky detail of unhinged energy-, water-, and land use.

I don't care if a tool is useful nearly as much as I care about not funding the destruction of our ecosystem.

Please don't talk about #ai without at least mentioning its extremely negative side effects.

If that ethical low bar is too high for someone, they should not be handed much power imho.

Ik heb een oude analoge elektriciteitsmeter. Werkt goed, ben ik blij mee. Inmiddels heb ik een stuk of 10 (meer?) brieven en belletjes gehad om haar te vervangen. Hierbij verschillende argumenten gehoord:

- digitaal is beter (hoezo?)

Ignorance and bad logic are an excellent way to troll me, I guess. But since not everybody got it, I'll rip apart this intolerant moronic opinion one more time.

"Keep porn on a porn instance" has the exact same structure as "Keep bigotry on a bigotry instance" or cats, or football or whatever. "Keep <topic> on a <topic> instance" begs the questions: why? how?

If you agree with the statement for one topic, and not the other. You must think one is objectively more harmful than the other. I'll say for the record bigotry is more harmful than porn.

Filtering out bigotry is harder than filtering out porn in here right now, because, guess what, pornographers have higher ethical standards than bigots so they tag and cw the porn typically.

Why is there porn on fedi? The fact that the internet is made of porn and cats should give you a clue. Fedi is just like the rest of the internet in this respect.

People have different tastes, many like porn. Deal with it or go away.
