Where does the idea of a "gestalt" species thing come from?

So, I'm thinking about Ideon, or Time-Flight, or other stories where everyone in a species combines into a unitary gestalt of orange goo or something except for Shinji and Asuka who hate themselves and/or literally everyone else in all of existence too much to jive with that.

Is there one thing where all this stuff comes from? Is it Childhood's End? Or something else that popularized it?

Ran across this EXTREMELY ACCURATE depiction of the springald seige weapon.

This thing gets worse and worse the more you look at it. Like ... it's even worse than those bad AI generated astronomy illustrations. A LOT worse.

Finally finished the raster routine! In NTSC. I'll fix it for PAL later.

First screenshot shows the 3 foreground sprites raster multiplexed into 152 four line sprites.

Second screenshot shows the 5 sprites used for underlay carpet.

#Remipede64

Just a couple mockups for my WIP Remipede64 ... my raster routing is coming nicely, but I only have the first few rows covered so far (see the raster split color on REMIPEDE and LEVEL).

You can see how the 5 sprite underlay fills in the color of the Jellies and the Remipede, compared to how they look flat without the underlay.

_Timelock_ mini-review and viewing guide

After having fun doing reviews of #SomethingIsOutThere I figure I'd do one for #Timelock - a lesser known Maryam d'Abo space prison movie from 1996.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxW4bbAg2KE

As in _Something is Out There_, d'Abo plays a crew member of a space prison ship, albeit this time she's human and the captain of the ship.

It's a bit of a fun diversion.

I was too young to be aware, so I'm asking - what was the mood like during the Bicentennial celebrations?

I mean, like ... with Watergate and Vietnam, and the oil crises, was the feeling like ... things have been rough, but can get better? Or what?

The A plot is a House of Wax situation where a wax museum artist is threatened by his twin brother who has escaped a facility for the criminally insane.

If you think you know where this story is going, you are absolutely correct.

Bottom line - Have fun watching the B plot. Just don't expect any surprises in the A plot.

I just noticed that the 4th Doctor always had a companion ending in "ah", except for The Deadly Assassin.

Sarah (Robot to The Hand of Fear)

The Deadly Assassin

Leela (The Face of Evil to The Invasion of Time)

Romana (The Ribos Operation to Warrior's Gate)

Nyssa (The Keeper of Traken to Logopolis)

I don't know what to do with this information.

So, for examples, these restaurants have gyros, which sound Greek, but also shwarma and falafel and baclava and taboule salad and ... I dunno.

I actually first had Greek food outside of Baton Rouge, ironically enough - Marathon Deli, College Park, Maryland, in like the late 1980s.

I had gyros and souvlaki at Marathon Deli a bunch... that's Greek food, isn't it? Or is it?

Could someone explain to me why we call them "Greek-Lebanese" restaurants?

Here in Baton Rouge, we have a lot of "Greek-Lebanese" restaurants. Decades ago, we just called them "Greek" restaurants. We do not call any restaurants "Mediterranean" but apparently that's a thing.

So, what even is this stuff? Is it just Lebanese/Syrian food but we call it Greek or Greek-Lebanese because people here are racist against Lebanon/Syria? Or is this an Ottoman Empire thing?

I don't get it.

My local 60s an 70s radio station is now playing "Material Girl".

If you don't know what decade is associated with "Material Girl", don't worry about it. Just us old folk commiserating as we do.

Like, "I got teleported back home, and also my horse was teleported back home."

Or, "I was on a train, and I got teleported to the station at the end of the line, face down in a toilet."

Teleportation. A timeless mystery.

TIL that the FEMA guy is hardly the only one who has experienced "teleportation". It's an entire pattern of people who are randomly teleported to where they intended to go, while driving, and also the car/truck is teleported, and also some of the gasoline is teleported out of the gas tank, and also the car/truck might have been teleported to a nearby ditch.

And also the person teleported is super drunk.

Makes me wonder whether this whole teleportation phenomena goes back to before cars.

There's still people on the "left" who say Gaza was a super important reason to help Donald Trump win the election (just as Netanyahu wanted them to).

No seriously.

They think they have a point.

They do not.

They never did.

Here's a clever way to "perch" and land quadrotors, using propeller guards instead of "feet". It requires reversible motor electronics, but other than that it's simple and elegant.

For "perching" on a ceiling, the drone simply flies up against the ceiling. The prop guards prevent the props from actually touching the ceiling, but the props are still close enough to get extra suction.

To land, the drone goes upside-down.

Let's rewind. Back when Israel started its latest genocide spree, they said they were using an AI to determine locations of legitimate Hamas terrorist targets.

AFAIK, everyone just reported this as if it were ... "true".

But to me, the obvious point was to launder indiscriminate blowing up everywhere at will. Did the AI have the ability to point out legit targets? I doubt it. Did it have the ability to highlight random dots everywhere? I think so.

This is what they want to bring to the USA.

@NetscapeNavigator That's simply not true. If you think the Democratic Party and the Republican Party both have the same agenda, and that this agenda is "Screw the American people and get rich quick", then you simply aren't mentally working the realm of reality.

For example, Senator Elizabeth Warren pushed the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - an entire federal agency whose purpose is to protect ordinary (American) people. That's part of the agenda of the Democratic Party.

As I see it, a low gravity research station is:

1) Useful research for future manned missions to almost any destination
2) Limited in scope and cost
3) Doable without much technology risk

But AFAIK no one is talking about this possibility. Instead we've got:

Mars mission, station, and/or colony
Moon base or "self growing city"
(Zero gravity) station in lunar orbit
