spot-on article by Philip Sherburne on the misdirected tech bro search to "solve" personalized (generative) music:
https://futurismrestated.substack.com/p/fr-192-infinite-personalized-music
"The idea that music is something that needs to be solved is absurd, ridiculous; it deserves ridicule. [...] Music is a form of communication. [T]he emotion that arose in the nexus between the artist, their creation, and you is the whole point of the thing."
Seeking generative/procedural artist beta users! (PLEASE BOOST!)
It’s now 2 years since I open-sourced my pet language, Flitter. I’ve used it for multiple live gigs, interactive installations and video artworks
However, I have no idea if it has value beyond my use. I need people to try it, tell me what they hate and what sucks most in the docs
You need to be comfortable at the CLI, example visuals on the #FlitterLang tag

I was interested to learn that leap seconds are to be retired in favour of "leap smearing", in which NTP clocks run more slowly around the time of the leap second. in one proposed solution, the last minute of the day will take a full two minutes to elapse. 🤯 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second#Future_of_leap_seconds
Open call for artists, designers, musicians, crafters, makers and other creative people in/around Sheffield.
Deadline: 9pm, Monday 25th November, 2024.
Course dates: Four Saturdays, 11am-5pm, during January/February 2025 – plus extra sessions and showcase
Patterns are ancestral technologies, evolving and adapting as they are shared across generations. Patterns are also a core part of contemporary creative technology. Our Algorithmic Pattern course will bring together different kinds of pattern-based arts through a program of creative and artistic development. This will include sessions on movement, video art, modular origami, and musical rhythm, combining hands-on activity with the use of creative coding and live coding tools to help explore these heritage practices, and help you look for new ways to develop your own creative practice.
We are keen to bring together a diverse group of people and practices, prioritising those underrepresented in creative technology, so if you are unsure whether you would fit in, please do apply!

A mashup of LCD Soundsystem & Miles Davis. Lovely from a musical standpoint but take time to appreciate the brilliantly spare choreography: “a pair of YouTube videos pulled up side-by-side in a now-ancient Safari browser…” https://kottke.org/24/10/lcd-soundsystem-x-miles-davis

particularly enjoying @viznut's Bringing Magic Back To Technology (2015), on cultural evolution, "wild magic", and the discovery of bytebeat, a universe of musical expression that lay dormant in computer code for decades:

‘Procedural portraits (1): Decoding ‘Eno’s’ generative structure’: First of a two-part exegesis (yes) on ‘Eno’, a generative documentary about musician and producer Brian Eno.
(Featuring slightly too much Lev Manovich, and a footnote explaining Sandi Toksvig from first principles.)
