Oh, and in all of this I'm supposed to be making glitch art and doing live coding but it feels like this scene is getting toxic, and my local scene is close to non existent. I can't even look to my community for respite.
I need a break, but it's not like I'll be returning to a good place.
I have decided that I probably need to step back from the whole discourse around AI for a bit. I obviously do care about it and the impact it is having on everything but it it demoralising to every day be bombarded with messages and opinions about it. Probably means muting/blocking some people or just leaving mastodon altogether for a bit.
Every day I see my peers releasing exciting new tools and I have to decide whether to be excited for them or be suspicious about how they made it. Then I wonder if it even matters: it's either a tool for personal use or for the 100 other weird art people. Then I think about whether I should use AI for some of my creative coding things. It certainly would speed up some things, and it's not like an error in a jpg glitching tool would bring down the NHS. I have used AI a bit for some things, but then I worry about whether even admitting that puts me on a block list and tars me for life. Then I think about my work and how so many creative opportunities are now somehow tied to exploring AI, and those that aren't offer so little pay. And then I'm told by people to "stick to your morals" but I'm looking my at rapidly depleting savings and I'm currently on the train going to a house viewing and I need to make this work somehow.
I just stumbled back on some pixel art I made a few years ago, representing the French North Sea coast
"It will, without question, be different in the coming months. There's no way around that. It remains to be seen whether it will be here at all."

It has been really interesting seeing the AI discourse come to the music world. I'm hearing non-tech folk express concerns I usually hear in tech circles e.g. code/project maintenance, trusting developers, bug/user testing, forking code. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWFboC0gsWc

"live coding would become untethered from software engineering, and reimagined in the context of heritage crafts. [...] we are now living in that post-AI world."

@yaxu nails it with this one. i'm feeling this even applies more broadly to many people's software making practice.
oh dude I have a 1 pixel high video and it won't upload 😢️
Let's test how well looooong videos are handled here
I'm applying to a few exhibitions and festivals to talk more about the process of creating these. If there's any that people can recommend that have open calls please let me know.
Will this wide video upload and display correctly? Let's find out!
It's 2026. If you're a musician, you should at least have a web page* listing your upcoming performances and your recent and upcoming releases. Bonus points for a newsletter. Gold star for a blog with some ongoing insights into your activities.
*Sure also social media, but foremost your own page
New plan: do nothing.
It's Monday, update your blog
Strudel has adopted a post-ai humane policy for live coding development:
All community members should be treated with respect and kindness. We welcome contributors to the community who are ready to follow this policy as well as our code of conduct.
Principles
* We wish to protect the humanity of our communities and projects, to support the motivation and well-being of all of its contributors and users.
* To this end, contributors and other users of our projects should not have to engage with LLM-generated code and text as part of their community work.
* We recognise that LLM-based scraping and generation of (A)GPL code shared by ourselves and others is of questionable legality. For example, under many juristictions, LLM-generated work does not have a copyright holder and can therefore not be licensed under the (A)GPL.
* A contributor's personal use of LLMs and related technology is their own business, whether for research, analysis, bug discovery or other assistive technology, so long as the output is not included in any contributions to our projects.

After many many months I think my exhibitions and events archive is finally completed! http://hellocatfood.com/events It goes all the way back to 2007!
Most of the events have their original links and nearly all of them are broken. I purposefully kept these and in many cases went through my old e-mails and the internet archive to find and insert them into the listings.
Even though they're broken I wanted to include them as a snapshot of what the internet was like at the time. Some can still be viewed on the wayback machine easily using this firefox extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/wayback-machine_new/ @internetarchive
In many ways this was a long and pointless exercise but if I don't keep records of my artistic and music practice who will?
if there's anything I've missed let me know :-)
