I am as horrified by the raging #fires in #France and #Spain as everyone else, but for the record I would like to state that #fediverse posts along the line of "This is only the beginning!", "It will get much worse in the future!" and "We are all doomed!" aren't helping.
While these statements may or may not be true technically (who can really know?), do we really want people in fear of their own future? Fear easily turns to overwhelm, which turns to apathy, which results in inaction.
All of us have agency. We can still turn things around to avoid the doomsday scenarios. If I were a #climatechange denier bent on eliminating voices advocating for change, inducing apathy in them would be the first approach.
So do we really want to play into the hands of fossil fuel companies by using #fedi to drive their agenda, even if it is unwittingly?
I think we can do better. Change will not be driven by fear and apathy, but by hope and determination. Let's spread these instead.
