We've *already had* watermarking on generated text for decades. First words of page = "Lorem ipsum"

People who plug text into "AI detector" sites: you are making a fundamental error of reasoning. Think about why you are trying to detect it, how the detectors could possibly be implemented. It's the same con.

@Stoneymonster @logicalelegance I think your posts are delightful, and I wish the culture here was friendly and fostering instead of "scold first apologize never".

Regarding image text, I personally found it easier and more fun to do once I realized you can use it as a subliminal channel to *comment about* the image and not just mechanically describe it, and everybody still seems to love that. "What should I be noticing about this" is just as important as "what is this"

I wonder how many of our serious cultural traditions actually derive from the ancient equivalent of shitposts

A rabbit-hole that exerts a strong pull, but so far I have been able to resist it: the history of techniques to display alphanumeric characters on cathode ray tubes.

This picture may very well be from the first fully electronic method proposed, invented at the Automatic Telephone and Electric Company in Liverpool in 1947. All glyphs are generated from sine-wave-like curves, truncated in different ways.

Does a carpenter bee consider herself a carpenter who collects pollen on the side, or a pollinator with a woodworking hobby?

I have two 🎫 guest memberships to give away to @tzimmer_history 's incisive newsletter Democracy Americana. If you have not muted me already you probably align enough with my politics to find it a good read.

Anyway he's making a drive for new members now and I have a couple to give away if anyone wants them. No charge since I already got these tickets as a perk of my own membership. Let me know if you want one!

Good news: We made the thing everyone is trying to detect, harder to detect!

My refrigerator has killed two light bulbs in the last week. I think it's just a coincidence but my evolved apophenia is incredulous
