OK this is fucking awesome. I hope every single NFL cheerleader association follows their lead (they're the first to unionize).

🗳️ Multnomah County Commission Chair

✅ Shannon Singleton has my vote, and her endorsements are stacked with a lot of names I trust

🗳️❌ Meanwhile, in Don’t Rank…

Julia Brim-Edwards lost the endorsement of not one but two organizations that had already endorsed her this year 🚩🚩🚩

“According to [Basic Rights Oregon], former colleagues of hers claimed she raised concerns during private meetings about transgender athletes participating in youth sports.” 🚮

Cool things you can do at the #library.

I’m just a guy on Mastodon, so don’t take my word for it — names I’m happy to see on any endorsements page include:

• Khanh Pham
• Tiffany Koyama Lane
• Mitch Green
• Cassie Wilson

How to do a shitty promotional email.

1. Don't say (in text) what you are trying to promote.

2. Make "PURCHASE TICKETS" look like a link, but it's just underlined text, and there's no functioning link in the text.

(I suspect it's for their staging of Pride and Prejudice which I saw and do NOT recommend.)

We observe many viral claims of touchscreen anomalies at some polling places. We investigated and found the reports wildly overstated. While people are on edge, this is not confirmed to be a serious problem, so far. Onward.

New blog post: pipx! pipx! Hooray!

It's been a festival of software vulnerabilities on the Internet this week. So I had to do some system updates...

"'Nobody knows what to do': How Long COVID left Physics Girl searching for answers"

Science YouTuber Dianna Cowern (Physics Girl) had over 2 million subscribers when she developed Long COVID after falling ill on her honeymoon in 2022. Brain fog, headaches and other symptoms turned her life upside down. Despite some improvement, she functions at just 30–40% of her previous capacity.

The anti-trans activists are attacking the Transgender Education Network of Texas.

If you want to do something to help trans kids in Texas, consider throwing a few bucks to TENT.

Over in #Texas, there has been a mass of fraudulent mailings and text spam to gin up anti-trans hate.

https://www.texastribune.org/2026/10/20/texas-transgender-pamphlets-tent-student-union/

One of the reasons this works is that the Dems have run in fear from the issue, rather than standing up to it. And, yeah, I'm looking at you James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa.

I hope Texas D's take this opportunity to recalibrate and start showing compassion for trans kids.

SLOW CLAP

@jette.bsky.social just returned from a trip to the UK, and she brought me back this fabulous present. I have the best wife ever.

If you're an open source project, non-profit, or other online community who is unsure or struggling with the recent #PHP stuff I might be able to help -- I've been working with @DProofreaders for 20+ years and @gutenberg_org since the spring. I have non-profit rates and would like to help.

See my website and book a free 30-min intro call to discuss your problem. If I can answer your question/solve your problem within that, you'll get your help for free; or DM me here.

If you run bind9 on the public internet you probably want to patch, just in case

php patched. 😅

I need to make that dynamic stuff go away -- especially WordPress. It's all legacy, and all my modern stuff is static.

I have so much old and neglected PHP crud on my web server, I don't even know where to begin with the current security panic.

I'm guessing just hope my site is too small to be discovered before Debian issues a fix?

In conventional voting you get one vote for who you want. In ranked choice, you get one vote for who you DON'T want.

If, for example, you don't like candidates Olivia, Eric, and Eli -- but you really want to keep Eli out of office -- then you should rank Olivia and Eric.

Leaving them off or filling your ballot with no-chance longshot choices won't block Eli. If your top picks don't win, lowly ranking Olivia and Eric improves chance of blocking Eli.

Here is a in-depth spreadsheet of candidates in the Portland city election.

Note that you can filter "Candidates" tab by doing Data → Create Filter View then click on the three lines symbol (kinda like ⏚) on the column you want to filter -- such as "Office".

Two things can be true at the same time:

1. I hope James Talarico wins Texas.

2. I wish the minimum twice daily, every day, text spams for Talarico would stop.

3. I wish Talarico didn't feel like he had to throw trans kids under the bus to win.

Oh, did I say two things?
